That won't sit well with the next guy that finds the remains. The enjenjo & Bonneville Airflows could use a sister car IMO.
There has been a hot rodded Airflow running around Maryland for years now. First saw it at the nats east when it was still held in Timonium Md. It was yellow and a highboy with American 5 spokes. I still see it from time to time although I think its a different color now. It was definitly ahead of its time for a "dare to be different" car.
I guess I'm getting old and stodgy too. Here's some pics of one I saw at a show last summer. Hard to imagine modifying it could make it much cooler.
I have always heard the story that Ferdinand Porsche bought 3 DeSoto Airflow two door sedans new in '34 and exported them to Germany, and that he borrowed a lot of the styling of them for the Volkswagen. Might be true, might be an old wives tale, but it does make sense.
Several years ago, maybe in Custom Rodder, there was a guy that had built an Airflow like a fenderless roadster, it was awesome lookin'....rixrex
I don't know about that...I once had a four-speed K-Car convertable that I lowered a bit....also had a Yugo that I painted up as a Paris to Dakar rally car..I owned a junkyard, why else?......rixrex
I presume you mean in a limited context that you would not hot rod one. I don't think I would either. My wife's daily driver is a Legacy Outback and while I rarely choose to ride in it or drive it, its actually a pretty good car with a race heritage that should not be disregarded. It sure doesn't have any potential as a traditional hot rod though.
I always admired the Airflows,I thought that they were ahead of their time, much like the later Cords.Years ago there was a very rundown old house on the east side of Seneca Lake just outside of Watkins Glen NY that was surrounded by neglected Airflows,I would guess at least six in number.I had a rodder friend of mine tell me that he stopped at the house to inquire about the cars, some guy there (not the cars' owner)told him he could have them for the taking. He never took any of the cars as it just didn't feel right.
I had a 34 DeSoto Airflow. Way kool car. Pretty solid and complete. And yes, the interiors are nothing short of crazy lookin. I liked the car a lot. Dad an I thought about putting in a modern drivetrain and just usin it as is. I also think it had the folding rear seat for camping/sleeping outdoors like the later Kaisers. It was just plain kool. However, having very little $$$ invested and a contractor willing to do 2 complete central air/funace systems for dad and I as an even trade I let it go. I believe the next car I got my hands on was a 68 GT500KR fastback. Again, I had very little in that one and made HUGE $$$ on it when the 1st upward spiral of those cars started. When you're raising a family ya gotta let em go sometimes.
That's not earlier, that's later. It's a 36 Toyota. Airflow styling, with a copy of a Chevy 6 in it. There is only one left in the world, and that one was hand built some time back
Yep, I remember seeing it at goodguys in Carlisle pa in the early 90's. That thing really impressed me. Really stood out from the crowd, it's hard to imagine, but Airflows look really cool without the fenders. They were pretty tough too, I remember seeing an old ad for them where they ran one off a cliff and then drove it away, just to show how strong they were.
Hey, DeSoto got caught in a squeeze play between Dodge and the Chrysler models at Chrysler Corperation. Always in compe***ion for production space and development money between Dodge and Chrysler cars, DeSoto had to go when Dodges target market spilled over into DeSotos, and Chryslers spilled downupon it. S****ey Devils C.C.
The yellow fenderless one was red or maroon when it was first built. Go to http://www.carnut.com/photo/list/flist.html click on Chrysler, then the year you want, he has a few pictures to see. Dean
his car. his money. he can do what he wants and he does'nt need yours (or anyone's) approval to do so.
That is mine, I think--from Denver. I have a '34 DeSoto Airflow grafted to a '48 Chevy Fleetline (back half). It is Kandy Gold and Kandy Tangerine.
