The closest to you that I know of is in Florida, REJ, Bob, with the slant 6 number 66. Do you have any pictures of your build? Tell us more, Inquiring minds want to know.
I'm not building anything, just a looky lou for now. LOL. I live 20 minutes from an 'outlaw' dragstrip and less than hour from a sanctioned strip (Headhunters and Macon National) and just wondered if there might be anyone from here racing at either of those.
If you are that close to an outlaw track, build one and help keep the place alive. Wish we still had some outlaws out here. N(o)H(ot)R(ods)A(llowed) pretty much has all of the Peoples Republic of California locked up.
I want to interject something here about drag strips. If any owners of them tune in here, this was our first run at a NHRA sanctioned strip in KC last weekend. We ran exibition only so we raced a**** ourselves. The cars drew just as many people and pictures as Don Garlits, the Hawaian and a lot more than Arny Beswick's GTO. We had people sometimes 10 at a time who were asking qusetions and older people saying they remember when dragsters looked like that. The kids who are 10 to 16 years old really love them, I can see a HA/GR HOt Wheel in the near future. NHRA has trouble filling a field to race top fuel and funny car because the cost is prohibitive. I am tired of watching it because you have John Force fielding 3 or 4 cars and Don Prudomme fielding the rest. It doesn't matter if they go 300 mph or not who cares, it is the racing between cars that a gearhead that works for an hourly wage can field and run competively that is really fun. In the old Super Stock racing you could buy a car race it on the weekend and drive it to work on monday morning. They had a Super Stock meet in Long Beach and a 100 cars showed up. We need racing to be an interactive sport not a spectator sport. I'll get off the soap box now.Roy
I don't think they're having any trouble staying open. Its been owned by a local M/C since the '60s and every time I've been up there they are quite busy. I'm guessing they're not in danger of being shut down, at least not that they know of, 'cause they just repaved the track and did some other improvements this past spring. They're pretty well out in the country and seeing as how there is no nearby interstate this area isn't experiencing too much urban sprawl yet. And they have the best lemonade in the world. LOL. http://www.headhunterdragway.com/id6.html
63 comet, how close are you to Reynolds, GA? The reason I ask is every May around Memorial Day weekend, Jimmy puts on a Run what ya brung meet. I have been there the last three years and it is a blast. I bring my HA/GR up there and run it. Make plans to join us next year. Robert
I was planning on going to the thing down in south Georgia week (Southern Nostalgia something or other?) after next but its the same weekend as Milledgeville's big fall hoopty do so I'm going to need to keep my shop open. If anyone goes to that please take pictures! I'm over two hours from Reynolds, I came down to the nostalgia drags (three?) years ago. Didn't have a chance to really talk to anyone. I got there right as the racing was starting so everyone was pretty busy. Work makes it hard for me to do anything on Saturdays, especially if its more than a few minutes away.
LOL... we've even met in real life. I'm Thomas, also 63comet on OSR, we met up at the ***berland Run a few years back when it was at that motocross compound.
Yep, I thought that was you. I miss that show, very unique contest at that venue - the moonshine run. I don't think I've had so much fun at a show since. So, you thinking of building a HA/GR car?
Yeah, I'm still upset that my wife talked some sense into about competing in the moonshine run. I'm sure I could have managed to rack up quite the towing fee out there. LOL. I'm not vaguely in the position to build a race car right now. But the cl*** is very interesting to me. If I at least had a place I'd be really tempted to start gathering a pile.
That's what I thought until a friend dumped some seed parts on me. I've been scrounging bits ever since and now approach having a rolling ch***is for the project. Since my start in March of 2007 I have invested $478.61 into the project, many hours of shop and home "backyard engineering" and lots of fun into the build. If you can find enough space to park the thing the build is worth the effort. I would be farther along, but open heart surgery in January sort of put the project on hold for several months. Now it's a great incentive program for my recovery. I guess my point is, if you want to do it, find a way. Today is a gift and tomorrow is unknown.
