I haven't heard really much of anything about these engines. Every once in a blue moon I see one for sale, usually very cheap. Parts availability? hot rod potential? Also there's a Lincoln flatty on ebay right now, seems like a big cube ford flatty, are any of the parts interchangeable?
the lincoln should be the same as the merc engines,as long as it´s a 8 cyl the cads are some 347cubes I think, and what I´ve HEARD they´re very heavy.
I see that cyclone (see trj 26) is going to start making heads for the cad. I believe Edmunds was about the only builder of parts for the cad. As for the Lincoln V8, iv been told there not the same as ford and merc.
Lincoln was 337" & not the same as Ford/Merc - physically much bigger/heavier. Also used in some large Ford trucks (F6 & up?). The Cad flatty was a pretty decent performer - for the design. Few speed parts were made, but there were some & they command high prices on ePay these days. Very heavy, but kinda neat looking with the exhaust coming out the top of the engine...
Just check out the Flathead Caddy in this so damn beautiful Deuce Roadster built by Kevin Sledge of the Shifters. PERFECT !!!
I don`t know anything about the Cad-flathead , but I found these pix in my files : Edmunds / Frank Burell intake :
Parts interchangability is limited to other caddy engines and world war II tank engines. I had a stock '47 caddy with one of these and a 4 speed hydro. It was my only car and a daily driver. I loved the car. The flathead engine never heated or gave me any problems and 150 hp seems like a low figure but the m***ive low-end torque moved the heavy car pretty good! The only drawback to my car was the antique 6 volt electrical system. At any temp lower than freezing, I hadda park on a hill and coast to 12 mph or more....drop the shift lever into low and it'd start on compression.... As was said earlier, there is precious little speed equiptment available for them and it is triple-expensive! I wouldn't mind using one if I had a good runner to start with..
I owned a 1941 346 and lasalle three speed for a couple of days but let it go to another HAMBER, damn I wish I could find another one. Oh yeah, they are heavy as ****, when I moved it around I could tell my engine lift was thinking OOOHHH SSHHHIIITTT!!!!
A friend has one. It was running when pulled and stored inside since. Low milage and complete with radiator. Missing air filter but it always had a rag in it. Standard trans set up. Asking $1000 OBO.
