Anyone know anything about Eelco?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by four-thirteen, Sep 6, 2003.

  1. I've picked up a few old eelco race parts for my model A. Now, I'd like to know more about the company. I've searched my library of mags for some history and turned up nothing. From the products I've seen, it looks like their goods were sold up until the mid 70s when I assume they went out of business or were eaten up by some conglomerate. Anyone who actually might have lived during that time know more about Eelco? Thanks, Dave

you are in luck, go buy Rodders Journal #23, the newest one. whole big story on eelco. haven't read it yet, just got it today at goodguys, but my favorite product was a cast aluminum toilet paper dispenser, that said "you are wiping out competition through the courtesy of chassis research corp" [IMG]

  4. Ha! That's a new one on me...I remember them selling the "footprint" gas pedals and they sold kick-ass aluminum race fuel tanks similar to Moon tanks but cheaper. They usta sell a package of footprint decals that we'd install in a very suggestive manner with the 2 big ones in the middle, toes pointing down and the little ones on either side of the big ones, toes pointing up.

  5. they were either bought out by Calcustom or the other way around , both use the same part #'s in later years, eventually both parts company's became the industry standard for Jap crap-Cheap potmetal pop offs. But STILL kool! That comglomerate is MR GASKET!

i sould correct myself, its not exactly a BIG writeup, a good quick history of the company itself, not much on the acutal products or anything.

you gotta wonder, and be envious of the guys who stole those toilet paper dispensers from tracks, speed shops or wherever. those have got to be pretty damn desireable now.

Good article, I just finished reading it. In fact, I always like reading TRJ, but I do believe this is my favorite issue to date. The Eelco story was interesting, of course I totally dug the R&C history piece, Edsel's roadster is one of the coolest things I've ever seen, and I absolutely friggin' go nuts over the Brizio built Model A roadster pickup. I saw that truck for the first time at Pleasanton last year, and I still have a woodie.

EELCO made a line of fuel system products very similar to Moon (Old days Moon, I mean), and branched out into Corvair/VW/dunebuggy stuff. I've got a couple of their tanks and pressure pumps, instrument panels, and such. Els Lohn, the founder, died in the last 2 or three years and until then hung out with Charley Price of Vintage speed. If you can get Charlie on the phone, you can derail him into a lengthy talkathon on history while he is supposed to be finishing some HAMBer's carb. He also stocks some NOS EELCO parts. If you get him talking, please post results here!

  10. I'll try to call charlie one of these days and try to absorb all the information that I can. I did pick up the rodders journal #23. The article was a bit brief, but was pretty good. Certainly good reading. Eelco looks like it was one of those good old american companies, manufacturing a quality product to fill a genuine hole in the marketplace, while owned by a very interesting person. A speed equipment maker that actually made more money off speed parts than t-shirt sales.

What peeked my interest was that I bought a 2 gal. Eelco tank for my racecar, and it seemed to be of much better quality than the current famous brand, and has a better style to it.

So, anyone know who currently owns the Eelco name? or am I going to have to call charlie? Thanks, Dave

Was Eelco tied to Chassis Research?
