I happened onto this photo about a month ago and kept it on my desktop thinking I'd see/hear more about where, how and when this happened. Maybe it's an old photo...I don't know. Anyone know anything about it?

Somebody doing something they shouldn't have been. Obviously going too fast. Maybe the throttle stuck.

Hope nobody was hurt. On the good side, there's one less Graffiti coupe left in the world. Gary

Found this online - supposedly at the Ocean City Maryland Show - may have been 2014:

"I heard that the throttle stuck, and he steered into the Fairlane and Comet to avoid going out onto the crowded boardwalk. Guess it happened so fast he didn't reach the key in time to turn it off before it hit. And I heard that both the Comet and Fairlane are both owned by one person. The coupe was part of a special display of American Graffitti tribute vehicles and this was at the end of the event. The movie stars that were signing autographs had already left the area, but the lane for the display vehicles to leave was clear as it had been blocked off for the line of fans waiting for autographs earlier."

Also found this pic - (Google reverse image search is a beautiful thing):

  9. Yep, Maryland State Police, Maryland plates on the Comet. Seems I remember hearing that this happened a couple of years ago. I was pretty familiar with the Fairlane wagon. Can't shed any light on what happened. I do believe the Fairlane was repaired. Those Ocean City shows can get pretty crazy at times. Too many cars in too small a space. I tend to steer clear of those events.

Thanks for all of the comebacks and info. A VERY BAD scene no matter who or what was involved. Very fortunate if no one was seriously injured....or worse !! A lot of work and $$$ "down the tube".

A local man was killed and his daughter injured in a similar looking car several years ago when the throttle stuck and he hit a tree. Osha requires big red emergency stop buttons on every piece of stationary equipment. Seems like it would be a good idea on everything

Spoke with a guy a few weeks ago with the complete front clip smashed on his custom. Said the master cylinder failed. Not a word about the empty jug of Crown on the rear floorboard.

Wasn't me! I am trying to collect enough purple and black crown bags to make a car cover for my roadster though

  20. Must have been one hell of a hit with lots of momentum to lift and move the comet into the fairlane that far.

  21. Was at a car show in town years back and a wiener on a sport bike pulled in front of the bar patio revved his engine and pulled a big ol’ burn out not seeings the 57 Cadillac about 100 feet in front. hit his brakes, dropped the bike and the bike just missed the caddy by, by nothing but the grace of God himself. bike slammed into the curb by the caddies left door.
Drive of the caddy got out approached said weinny ( no longer on his bike)
And beat the ever loving shit right out of him! With the applause of all us on lookers!
If this was a stuck throttle in a panic situation then no harm done things can always be fixed ( albeit it sucks the big one)
But stupidity in a crowded location with expensive and rare rides is unforgettable.

Over the years I have seen 4 screw ups like this because of no neutral safety . Much bent metal and a broken leg.

  24. Ok, so the throttle stuck,,,
    Now, it stuck wide open,?
How in the hell did it get to be wide open?

Oh I see, you put your foot on the floor fully opening the throttle to Wide and after you did that- then the throttle stuck.

The local guy here had a motor mount fail. When the motor twisted it pulled the throttle. He probably didn't use the interlocking mount for space in the frame. Still, the engine has to have quite a bit of throttle to have the torque to twist in the frame. Chevrolet had the motor mount problem from 1965 to 1970. After that they started using interlocking mounts so if the rubber failed they didn't come apart. They also used throttle cables that wouldn't cause the engine to rev up if the engine moved.

  26. mainly the reason I step away from the from of a blown car when I see a whole "What me start this up" at a show or cruise in.
I don't need to be squashed right in between a stuck throttle and a wall or car.

There are a couple of those characters around here that show up at rod trots quite often. No blowers on either's car but you can set your watch by the timing of when they fire up their engines and gun them for a minute or so to see if they can draw a crowd. So far neither has had his car take off on him but it's only time before someone else tries it with a car that isn't setup all that safely.

We have an organised cruise nite at 2 locations in Winnipeg. The often stated rule is idle through the lot and don't be a jack-ass when you leave. One young gentleman left in a cloud of tire smoke one evening. Then came back and was refused entry to the event. He put up a huge scene at the entrance. Then he decided he was coming and they couldn't stop him. He dropped it in gear and started moving a lot quicker than he should or maybe even intended. He pushed over 2 security and a spectator and then swerved into a very nice 39 Rod. Police we already there as part of the event (invited and welcome) the driver was still yelling it wasn't his fault as they arrested him. No one was seriously hurt. I talked to the owner of the Rod that got hit about a year later and he had a serious time convincing the insurance company to cover the incident. The insurance company sued the offending driver for damages and medical for those he injured

I watch the videos of folks leaving car events and doing so at a high rate of speed and with a lot of tire smoke and feel that they are disrespecting the event and the culture. Similar to my other post, the Police sat a few blocks down from one of the cruise events and hauled over anyone who decided to put on a show as they left. The Police were criticized for entrapment as well as harassing the event and car culture. The local Rod club and the event itself came to the aid of the Police and supported them being there. I agree...
