I tried searching but didn't come up with anything. Found this on Tampa CL today. Anyone know if it's real or ********? http://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/cto/4247727826.html
Yup, as far as I can recollect it the real deal. Saw that car on American Pickers and it's been mentioned in a few threads 'round here.
I read the thread on here when the poster was trying to ID the car . Also there are a few posts about it by a guy that's banned now. Thread ***led, American Pickers Land Speed Record Car Unearthed
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=794364 Here is the thread from the guy. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Seems to be a way out there price for a car with no compe***ion history, and not compe***ive now. What would a guy do with it?
I did a search yesterday and couldn't find any "old" photos or info on the car from the time it was built or supposed to be built. Even if it didn't actually run on the beach at Daytona photos of it from that time period should exist. My guess is that rather than "plastic" the original body skin was aircraft fabric with the same coating that goes on it. There were a number of race cars or land speed cars done that way in that time period.
This car was all over the Antique Car Club site. The guy has, pretty much, fabricated a story about the car and sticks to his story. It has absolutely no history. Nobody, so far, can identify it or link it to Preston Tucker, Ab Jenkins or the Pierce factory. It is an interesting car with some nice workmanship, but the general consensus is, that it is, more than, likely, a homebuilt car. There are no records of it running in any LSR event ever. He's back on the ACCA site, offering a 500 dollar reward for information that will substantiate his imagined claims. I think it is because he discovered an Adler Rennlimousine a while back and is trying to become an Indiana Jones of rare cars. I think he bought a pig in a poke
Sometimes you get lucky buying a pig in a poke. Sometimes you will be squealing with joy when you get an outrageous price for it other times you are the pig on a rotisserie and be taking a screwing up the but on it. Sorry, I can't add anymore on this car that hasn't been mentioned but I agree or should say my opinion someone is trying to turn this sow's ear into a silk purse
WAIT! The tin foil isn't original?! Psh in that case I'll give him 50k for it hahah but seriously if there is no proven build or race history, its his word against our research I'll just stick to the saying "Just because its old, doesn't mean its worth anything" but I wouldn't mind being proved wrong
Somehow it looks like the work was done in the 50's to me. It doesn't look right. The foil doesn't help things. Needs some better pictures of the details.
I'll buy the airplane cloth and dope theory for the body covering. Properly done is certainly worthy of high speed and damn good looking too. History that is iffy isn't history, it is conjecture.
I agree,,If the car was ever covered I would think it would be like the early bi planes using organic materials like cotton & cellulose dope. Now when these old airplanes skeletons are covered they use nylon and a adhesive that is not as near as flammable as the cellulose dope. The owner would have better luck trying to sell the car with something like I referred to instead of a abundance of Reynolds Wrap! HRP
