I'm trying to get a set of custom made 1955 California yellow plates with a specific tag--for novelty purposes only. Anyone know of a place or person that could do this? Thanks much!
Here's how we have made "Wall Art" plates. Spray a real plate with mold release (PAM) and cover with three inches of plaster of Paris. Give the unharmed real plate back to the owner. Pour a hard setting epoxy like 3M Panel Bond or Marine-Tex into the P.O.P. female mold and lay a rigid backing on while still wet. Drill alignment pins before separating. Now sand twice the thickness of your metal off the letters/numbers to give clearance for pressing into the mold. Place a slightly oversize blank plate in the mold, we use dead soft copper, and press plate down into the female mold with the male. We make sure the back side of the pop is flat and parallel and also "toughen" it up with a coat of POR 15. Break some--damn right; perfect--hell no, but surprisingly nice enough when in bar lit room and ten feet away. A real wood worker could make the male/female out of hardwood and make sure enough nice ones for use on soft aluminum/copper.
There's a fellow that I met at the Pomona swap meet that will make you any year or type plate. I have a 1923 Arizona plate on my "C" cab that's rough he would reproduce it for $ 175.00
YOM 1955 plates were not yellow. They were black with yellow numbers/letters. "55 plates were also longer. Yellow plates were "56 through "62.
there was a guy at the Turlock Swap meet today from Southern Calif that does plastic & metal - maybe someone going tomorrow can get info.
Ray Ray out of San Diego makes them. I didn't easily locate his card. Here's his ebay site, and an old thread. Found his number, 858-695-2448. email-rayrayframes@aol.com http://stores.ebay.com/rayslicenseplates http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/anyone-make-vintage-license-plates.113924/
