i know where there is a 37 ford p/u that was hot rodded back in the late 50's and early 60's. the truck does run, is probably drivable with some little tinkering. its been sitting for atleast 30 years with a few trips when it had been moved just to be parked again. how do i convince the person to sell it. it will continue to sit and rot along with some other old ford stuff this guy has if something isnt done. please help with ideas. JP
Best advice I can give you is to move on,find something that IS for sale. Or wait until the guys dies and buy it cheap from his family. I have watched a 40 Chev couple literally rust into the ground, even had my wife try to buy it, she is the one that wanted it anyway, no luck. Go see the guy couple times a year, never can tell. Good luck!
Go over with a stack of Franklins in hand, a trailer to haul it home, and a buddy to help push it on the trailer. Money always talks. Sometimes the guy will listen, sometimes not. But at least then he'll know you're serious, and then keep visiting him if he doesn't sell. And if he does sell, don't be one of those clever guys who tinkers with it in the driveway to get it running and then drives it out of the old guy's garage. Just get it on the trailer and go. Sure, a mild form of it is advertising! Really, repeating your 'product' or 'agenda' over and over. Example: Old timer's know these: "Thing's go better with _____" Or this one "Winston taste's good like a ______ should". Jingle's that drive you nut's, ect. So like the other HAMBer said make a monthy visit. A big handfull of cash in small bill's may sway him too. Good luck.

I have found that when you fan a bunch of $100 bills, it looks like a helluva lot of zeros! Their eyes get big and they WANT those hundreds!
yeah something should work. i have known the guy all my life but he is a trip. this dude is a horder i think because he didnt have shit growing up so anything he has gotten he will want to keep no matter what. he has 3 other 30 era fords on his property that havent run in a coons age and probably never will, his son is a total tool and thinks he is going to inherit them, he has said he is going to fix 'em up. he doesnt even know what socket set looks like. well anyways i will give your ideas a shot. i think maybe 10 c notes should be more than fair but i will start out lower. tell him his daughter is a great lay and you want to marry her. or seriously, just prove yourself worthy to him. if you've been into old cars your whole life like your profile says, that it should be a no brainer to pass it on to a worthy home. help him get it running for himself. if i had my old hot rod sitting around in 30 years, i'm probably not gonna give it to somebody to fuck up, i'm gonna make sure it's somebody who understands my build style etc.
Offer to put one of the others on the road for him...in exchange for the one you want yourself...and then DO IT. He wins, his kid wins.....YOU win. Are they do-able as a basic repair job? Bill
One approach that might work over time is to make a big deal of the fact that you will take good care of the truck. Ask what his ultimate plan was for it. That's exactly what you had in mind. Right? Of course if he loves it the way it is, promise to never change a thing. You'd protect it from those crazy hoodlums that would chop and channel it.
[ QUOTE ] tell him his daughter is a great lay and you want to marry her. [/ QUOTE ] I was trying to get a 1932 Vicky from a older LADY. I was a teen ager. I was real nice, turned into a handy man for her. Cut grass, done some painting, ran errands.......(she always paid with cash). Never did work for getting the 32........she still has the Vicky forty years later.. But I did have a couple FUN get naked dates with her grand-daughter ..but I did not want to marry her.
A friend of mine buys and sells all sorts of cars. When he sees something thats been sitting out, and gets rejected when he offers to buy it, he goes and buys a cheap car cover to fit it. He takes it back to the people and says something like.."Well if youre not gonna sell the car, please take enough care that it doesn't get further damaged by the elements. Here's a cover for free, as I hate to see a car get destroyed that way. When you go to restore it one day, the expensive interior wont be destroyed. And if one day down the road you do want to sell it, it will be worth more..." He leaves his number in case they change their mind. He has ended up with countless cars this way... Sorta mind control...
i covered my car a year ago after going thru and cleaning out the cobwebs and mildew. the covers really work pretty good. the interior stills looks almost like i left it.
