This is one of Kirk's picutures I hope it was okay to use it in my own thread. I just really like the color of this car and was wondering if anyone knew what I would need to dupicate it. I probably wouldn't be able to replicate the finish because of the prep work required, but I'd like to paint my tub that color.
I can't tell if it's dark blue or purple. I'd love to have the exact color to match with PPG, but I know that's a lot to ask. I was hoping maybe someone who knew the car or owner might have the info. thanks
Something you might want to think about is how the color would look on YOUR car. That deep blue/purple color is just right for a custom like that, but it seems to me it would be out of place on a tub. Picking the right color is a tricky business! even trickier than building the car.
The owner of the car also owns Cypress Autobody in Cypress California, if you do a google search on Cypress autobody, and ask him he is a really cool guy... John
I really dig this Merc as well as the color... From this thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=147802 Bryan
It looks like it is cobalt blue. It's very nice. I know I won't get it to look like that, but I'd like to try the color out.
Years ago Frank Livingston had a '51/52 Chevy Fleetline that was this color and it was said it was mixed to look just like the "Phillip's Milk of Magnesia" bottle, a real beautiful dark blue. Does any remember that car?
I remember Franks car and I have seen both in person Franks looks a little darker, but yes very close, I really liked Franks car... John
have you seen the car in person? i ask because it's not a good idea to pick a color from an image on your computer monitor. pixels rarely reflect what a color looks like IRL.
Very good point not brought up much around here. The colors on your monitor are usually quite different than it would be in person. The light in the pic, the way the camera caught the colors, and the vibrance of your screen are all variables. Pretty rare for the colors to be exact. Close, but not exact.
Read post #11...it's lapus blue base with silver inserts and 6 coats of candy cobalt blue, posted by NOT_Z who works at the body shop that worked on this car. Bryan
Thanks for all the advise. When I called PPG to ask about the cobalt blued the guy said there are a lot of cobalt blues so I'd just have to bring the picture in and we could try to match it. I don't know much about paint so I do appreciate the advise. I'll make sure to keep in mind that the monitor will probably effect the colors when I take the picture in.
It was definitely a dark blue rathe than a purple. There are also some subtle graphics low and near the rear fenders.
its house of kolor cobalt blue with a lapus pearl blue base....jeezzzz and it looks as good in person
"Cobalt" can mean three things-(1) a standard paint color used by artists, (2) many companies' term for marketing a similar shades for various purposes, and (3) Specifically, a marketing term used used by Buick in the early 50's for a stock paint # that was very popular-for-rods and customs in the early days.
hey newbie's look at the date of this thread. JPmachado isn't even around anymore. He took his dumpster roadster and rode off into the sunset.
