Yes, a vibration damper. It actually goes on the 8.8 axles. Intended to cancel vibrations from the driveshaft in cars with OD. Although the bracket does look like it goes to a "front load" style axle. I don't recall ever seeing one on an 8". Could it be for a 9" outta say a Cougar/Tbird from that year?
i bought one 8" ford rear that had one of those on too...i had never seen one before. i took it off with no problems i'm not sure about cars with OD...the rear had 2.79 gears , i wouldn't think the car it came from would have overdrive
Yep a vibration dampner. Not really needed. I've seen a few of those on 8" rears out of 70's Granada's and a Maverick or two.
Thanks guys, that's what I thought it was. Just wasn't sure if I really needed to put it back on. It came off of a 8" out of '79 Monarch, yes it had 2.79 gears and most likely overdrive. Don't know much, but I know where to go to get the answers, thanks again!
Just like the other stated, it is a dampener for 8" or 9" rears. Ford had a bad tendency to not ballance drivelines and such and would hang weights like this off the diff or the back of the transmission to calm the harmonics. Also common on some of the triangulated four link rears where pinion angle wasn't optimum and could buzz.
Sure that's an 8" rear and not a 7.5? I think most of the Fox ch***is Fords up to 1985 had the 7.5. The 7.5 that was originally in my '83 Fairmont had that damper on it - as did the late 80's 8.8 Mustang rear that is now in the car.
Hmm...good to know. I thought the Monarch/Granada was the first Fox based car. A lot of Granada parts are compatible with my Fairmont.
