Scoot, it seems like the space you have available would lend itself to using an offset inlet/outlet, like the one shown in the Cherry Bomb ad above. I imagine that there's a length of perforated tube attached to both the inlet and outlet, so the effective length of the muffler would be twice as long. No?

There's a shoebox thread, it's Stefan's thread I think... he's built his own mufflers and he said they work great! If I find it I'll post it up!!

Man, as much as I would really like to turn this thread into a "this is how I made a muffler" thread, I think I may go the direction of a pair of these little Cherry Bombs, or something similar. Hard to believe that those little things would have much effect at all, though.

Oh... And it turns out that we have a pre-runner type truck here at the shop that actually has those little 10 Series Flowmasters on it. They are super load and actually sound pretty good. Kind of hard to compare, though. It's a Ford 5.0 roller motor, I believe. None the less... LOUD, but probably just as loud as what a cherry bomb will be. Maybe just a different tone.

Thanks everyone! Well, since the thread was started as a place for DIY mufflers, maybe we can keep the DIY input going just for kicks. May as well make this a useful thread.

Hard for me to believe too. I think you could save some money by putting in 8" of straight pipe and it wouldn't be any louder.

made these for about $16 ea. baffles from speedy bill, turnout from o'reilly auto parts, cut baffles down welded to header flange and they knocked the sound better than i thought...

Ive made several shapes and sizes and I found its hard to not make them too quiet. In fact the whole muffler thing is over rated in my opinion. The last pics are of one I made with 4 baffles. It turned out to be pretty quiet but flowed the same as a Flowmaster 3 baffle that was much louder. Those ended up on the motorhome. The smaller ones have some mis direction baffles in them but are pretty much empty and are plenty quiiet for the street with very little flow drop. I honestly doubt if I will ever buy another muffler. I strongly suggest you try building a few and see just how easy they are to make and with how little inside of them really quiets things down.

The round one has one baffle 30 inches long in it that is snail shell shaped. The one baffle has probably 30 1 inch holes in it and is whisper quiet. I ended up using it on the aux generator for the motor home.

The little triangle guys are on my Jeep with a SB 350 and are no louder than most flowmasters. Been running them for a couple of years now and love um. .

  13. I'd like to see the guts on the round one. This has turned into a great thread! I never considered making my own mufflers.

Wish I had a pic or 2 of it but I dont. Its is really basic, The round one is 2" thick with a flat baffle welded 2 inches from the outside wall while keeping that 2 inch clearence till I ran out of baffle. Another words it cork screwed towards the center with a 2" wide run. The baffle has A row of 1 Inch holes the full length of the 36 inch baffle. The exhaust exits out the flat side towards the center. The only down side is that the exhaust stays in the cal longer than normal and the thing gets hot. LOL I guess it could double as a cat. LOL
