Technical Anyone paint the inboard sides of their hiboy frame rails black instead of body color?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Just Gary, Sep 3, 2022.

  1. Gary Keesler's iconic yellow '32 had a black-painted center crossmember & inboard sides of rails:

So did Ryan Reed's '32 in RJ #64:

Thoughts? Have any of you HAMBers done that? Would you do it again?

It seems like a good idea for a really nice car that you're actually gonna drive.

  2. I would say the difference in cost between high dollar red paint (or other colors) and chassis black would make me think about doing it.

If I was going to paint the underside of the body the same color as the top side (like red for example) I would consider painting the interior of the frame a contrasting color (black, or a cool hammer finish). If everything was red including the frame it wouldn't look as detailed underneath IMO.

Bet, back in the day there were more that remained factory black inside, even if the outside was painted body color.

I'd do it on a driven/show car just to make touching up rock chips easier.

A little krylon spray can black and a few minutes and I'd be done with the inside.

I've done a couple, had the inside of the 32 frames powder painted gloss black, then we sprayed body color on the outside. it takes a cooperating powder painter to mask off the top, bottom and sides, then spray the inside, remove the masking and then bake. Cost me extra to have it done but I don't remember how much?

I just did that to my roadster frame. The outside is mid 60s Buick Diplomat Blue metallic and I painted the inside, from the firewall back, with Krylon Rust Tough semi flat black. So everything you see normally is body color. I’ve had great luck over the years with that type of Krylon as chassis paint. I figured that I would probably have to add a bracket or drill some holes under there and that paint touches up nicely. Hard to see in the picture. A whole lotta masking.

  9. I seem to recall the SoCal lime fire roadster was black on the insides. I think

Why not, looks good to me, my High Boy Roadster and my 32 3 Window had the frames all the same color as the body. What ever floats your boat.

I am always mindful that I may want to change the car's color later on. So all the visible chassis is painted to match or compliment the outside, but the rest is either black or a dark non-color like gray or red oxide. But every car is different so this is not an unbroken rule, just a practical consideration, especially if I'm using a trendy color on the body...

  12. Actually, to me, the chassis and its rails are black and just the exposed outside face gets painted to match the body. I feel like it's a more accurate way to phrase it. But I can be a minority, as usual. :p

My car is painted a cream colored early Porsche color, very similar to Ford Wimbledon White.
I did not want the underside of the car that color, so I choose to have the entire frame powercoated in satin black.
The chassis is Fabricated by Ionia Hot Rod Shop and with all those signature bellied hole boxing plates of Dennis Lesky, there would be no way of getting paint in all the bare areas, where powder coating could get to better and decided it was the only way to go.
The outer rails were then sanded and sealed and painted body color. I will say sanding the orange peal texture out of the powder coat was a challenge, but came out great.

Saw this one at a show here in Penna. this month. The whole frame was painted black (not just the inner rails like your question asks). I appreciated the look. Made my eyes focus on the 'hi' portion of the vehicle and then notice the frame second.

Not my vehicle and I do not know who owns/built it, otherwise I would give credit to the owner it was a nice rod.
