All the posts made it look like such fun, that I just GOTTA go next year! NO WAY the controversial Vickup will be done by then...and it isn't supposed to be a drag strip flogger anyway...so I've hatched an alternate Plan for a fun, sorta low-buckish beast to have some fun with before it grenades itself! Here's what I've cooked up: 50-54 Chevy wagon gutted for weight and stripped of all non-essentials. 400 cube small block Chevy out of a buddy's old 4x4 TH-350 tranny with cheap stall converter and shift kit 10 bolt axle with 4.10 gears Straight axle front if time and funds allow it Swap meet mags with slicks out back The motor is in an old 4x4 I know about up north...parked due to a leaky oil pan. It'll get a Crane cam, Edelbrock tunnel ram with two 750 Holleys, dual point distributor, headers, and not much else beyond basic tuning parts and maybe a new fuel pump or something! Need to find the body cheap, but that shouldn't be a trick...find one with a slightly crumpled or rusty front clip that the two door guys haven't raped yet! The rest is easy stuff! Transpo to the digs might be a problem...but shit...my stuff stays together well...so I could always DRIVE it there! If it blows up...who cares?!? I can buy Rocky's NEXT low-buck bomber for the ride home! Just checked the Speedway catalog...looks like V8 mounts for Rockstarmobiles is no problem...can't think of a reason NOT to do it!! Cheap and easy Hack Rods are ALWAYS fun to build and drive...I've done 'em before! I'm hoping to at least run 13s or MAYBE high 12s before I let the smoke out of it!! Are the drags gonna happen next July as well? Plenty o'time! What are YOUR plans????
I'm gonna bust ass this fall and winter to get the Rocky 36 goin for the drags...I dunno if you could call it a digger...more of a "street altered" with the old Chrysler hemi, caddy 3 speed tranny and 57 Pontiac rear axle. I just made a deal with Carkiller for a posi 3rd member. Has 3.23's in it right now but 4.88's are only a phone call away. I also have a 3.23 single leg gear set in the axle right now to drive to the races and swap out the 3rd member in the motel parking lot for the hog-rassle...then swap back for the drive home. Real men drive their racers to the drags and WIN! Then, drive 'em home to their women.
Not sure what I'll be piloting....but I will have something that will turn better than a 19 second quarter next time around...! You know, I do have a 472 Cad engine sitting in the shop....and a 455 Buick....and a 2-dr '51 sedan body .... damn, like I have time for another project! Brian
Oh, it wouldn't take long, Brian...gut, weld and bolt together..... I'll bet you even have a clapped out 49-50 coupe body down in those trees. Hate to see you waste a good 51 tudor. The 472 with slicks and a posi would ROCK!
I'm with Rocky,.......Use that 472 and the Chevy, those Caddy motors have gobs of torque without doing much to 'em. That could be a gasser project for a future write up. I'll have the HAG ready for next year for sure, and my little 34 pick-up will be done too.......
im building a hot rod to bring to the drags powered by a 331 HEMI.... were gonna weld it up at bleeds this winter. heres a pic of the shell nother grudge match rocky??? TUCK
ill be there next year fer sure, to much BS and drama going on in my parts to go this year, anyways my lil black truck will be there ripping off high 11's,,,,,all motor and driver "and you can take that to the bank!". guranteed
WHAT??????? Tuck, didn't you get enough abuse this year? You want s'more? I'll be happy to dish out a little more, dude. I'll bet your little girlie-man 331 is an old stocker outa some old stockbroker's New Yawker...prolly carboned up to the max and never been over 3400 rpm.. Ha ha ha hahaha! Sure, come on down and I;ll smoke ya!
Hay- I don wanna be the only one from the Rambler camp there next drags!Im gonna finish my '57 Rambler Metropolitan.....eight point cage narrowed 31 spline 9"posi and 400sumpthun CU IN small block chevy.....7500 rpm STALL[man trans].....am planning on using more gears than low also this time....
Actually Tuck, I'll be yer huckleberry My T will make a nice match on the line for that kickass A you are working on. The Touring is in full effect right now. I was bangin tin for a few hours tonight. It was a good weekend.
Details, details......so ya squeeeked one out. Next year is a whole new ball game.... btw..about those front hubs... Mine are from a 40, not a 46-48...they'll require some machining on the back side to mount flush on your buick drums...sorry Tuck. I thought they were 46-48's...but they are drilled for both 5 on 5.5 [early ford] and for 5 on 4.75 [chevy bolt pattern]Here's a couple photos... Let me know if you still want 'em for our previously arranged deal....
rocky thats cool i think i may have a line on some chrome reverse chev bolt pattern! SO... email me your cell phone number so we can chat about that deal! Thanks, Tuck
Hey Rocky....I don't have a coupe but I do have a sedan delivery....pretty roachy, just needs another firewall and front floorpans spliced in... let's see...parts list... 1. Damn, I've got everything I need! Well, here we go again.... Brian
