So I'm still working on the coupe and as though I needed another project, I picked up this 59 ford pickup. I have plenty of parts laying around, so I figured I would put the volare clip in it along with the 351C/3 speed.

Has anyone done a Volare in a 57-60 ford pickup. I haven't picked up the truck yet to look at it. But I was wondering if anyone had any previous experience with the two together?

    Here's the pickup.

I got a 57 F100 and the clip, but together yet. I talked to a few people last year about this swap at the HAMB Drags. If you run a Ford motor watch out for oil pan clearance. Evryone made it sound pretty easy.

  6. I did clipped my 57 f100 recently, but I used a camaro. there's some pics of the process here:

It was pretty easy to do and it drives nice... well... like a '77 camaro anyway. It sits very low, but I still cut the springs a little. power steering and power disc brakes come with the swap. I don't think you could get a ford engine in it without changing to a rear-sump setup though.

I have done one under a 56 Chevy truck. One thing to consider is what I have heard refered to as wheel drop back. This means that if you put the spindle of the new sub frame at the same spindle location as the stock axle the wheel will not center in the fender wheel opening. On the Chevy truck with the installation as far up into the stock frame rails I moved the spindle C/L 1.5 inches forward. I Have heard on the 56 Ford truck 1 inch forward is typical. The only problem I encountered on the 56 Chevy Truck was clearance for exhaust side the steering box is close to the side of the engine. I used stock Rams Horn. I also took into consideration for the trucks rake and mounted the sub frame down several degrees in the back which in turn made it sit level when finished

Set the rearend at ride height, lop off the front stuff thats in the way and then make templates of the shape of the crossmember...transfer to the rails and cut out the stuff thats in the way (I set the lower arms parallel to earth...front to rear) when it all matches up weld it on. of course you need to center the wheels.... Thats pretty much it....way easy.

  12. There's a shot or two in my F-1 album. It's a 50 though. I may have others if you want to see more.

I wish you were 10 hours closer.....

I put one in a 47' Ford pu earlier this year. Drives good but it is to wide for the eariler pickup. But hey the customer wanted it and loves it.

  18. I put one in my 57 chevy pick up and the only problem I had was I had to off set the motor about 2" to clear the steering box. other than that it was a snap. The ride is fantastic. Replacement parts are higher. For instance drop spindles for a chevy can be bought for $175 and for the Volare cost about $550 shipped to my door.

  19. Don't. Use ElPolacko's Dakota kit. Volare stuff is obsolete/discontinued, plus refitting the front sheet metal can be a pain. With his kit every thing bolts back on as it was, plus it handles/rides/stops/steers like a modern pickup-not a boat.

I have been thinking about clipping my 60. I'm not sure what I will do yet but I know that it wont be a volare clip. If you ever had anything with the torsion bar suspension you wouldn't either. Ive had 2 and they both sucked. It was like driving a big mushy bole of jello.

El Packo what kind of money are we talking for one of your kits?

  24. Basic crossmember kit is $729.00 and will accept the 1987-1996 Dodge Dakota two wheel drive components.

Stuck a Volare under my 56 F100 with no problems. You don't have to sever the frame horns so sheet metal realignment isn't a problem. Liked the integral power steer and disk brake set up. Can also vary the ride height somewhat also.

I hope you splice it in there cleanly cause I have seen some that have been done and look like shit are you getting the front clip for free?? cause you could get a weld in crossmember from welderseries.com for about 200 bucks and then you can get the control arms it seems like if you front clip it with a camaro or volare then you and whoever gets it after you are stuck with it no matter what.

Yep, I've already got the frontend. We've been storing it for a future project. So since we have it already and I don't have to buy/pull another frontend, it's getting used.
