Projects Anyone recognize this widened 5 window Model A Coupe?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by redranch, May 26, 2017.

  1. I went to see the progress on my 32 steel 3 window yesterday and found this sitting in the guys shed. Apparently it was a well know car in its time, but he didn't know too much about it.
It is a 5 window Model A Coupe body that has been widened and sits on a 50/51 Mercury chassis.

I don't ever remember seeing a picture of it. I'd say it was probably put together in the mid/late 50's though. Maybe by a body shop guy with a lot of left over parts.

WOW is right!! Got to give the guy credit he wasn't afraid to go in another direction. Good thing there is no shortage of A Bones as this one ---well yea this one. I don't really think there are words to express something like that.

Looks like a never finished project to me, from the 'way back' machine. Like to see it in it's finished state. Interesting and outta the box.

I can see a 12 year old in 1960 taking some scotch tape and a little blocking to set up his 1:18 model kit leftovers as ... DREAM CARS... not me I was 4.

Looking at it a bit more I'd say some of the inspiration came from those "how to build your own sports car" articles in Mechanics Illustrated or Popular Mechanics Actually I think it was popular mechanics that was behind the idea at the time and some got the coveted "golden hammer award"

An early version of "I'm going to do a chassis swap to get late model brakes, suspension, etc"
early traditional version of S-10 swap.
I will admit that it looks like the work was done well , but just not to my liking

Hard to tell from those photos, but is it chopped and sectioned also?

The scoop on the roof and the steering wheel say late 50s-early 60s to me, but I'm not an expert. I kinda like it although the transition in the front looks a bit awkward.

That's....different. What's the story on the flared fender mid year corvette sitting next to it? And that sidecar looking thing in front of that? Looks like an interesting place to visit.

  17. The Corvette is a 427 car and was raced at some stage...I'm going back next week and can take photos of it. But yes it's an interesting place...I took lots of photos of other cars that I need to sort through but here is a small sample of what is there in his back yard and out buildings.

Cool pics. That A looks vaguely familiar, especially the front.
Or I could be wrong, which happens often.
Your guy doesn't know anything about it?
    Hell, I'd drive it.
Don't care for that thick shit on the roof, though.

Lots of neat stuff, the guy likes his customs for sure! The '55 Chevy looks to be a clever 4 door conversion. The widened A has some neat elements to it, would be cool to find out it's history.

I kinda like it and would like to see it finished!
To me, it's a whole lot better than some rat rods I've seen!
