Anyone regret shiny painted dashes?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by davidh73750, Mar 3, 2014.

  1. IMHO...Depends on the shape of the dash. I.E. 1939 Ford..Vertical and Flat...in my 39 sedan...no problems...in my 40 coupe? might be a problem..... Shiny can be good and bad.

Depends on the car. I have a 50 Pontiac with the dash covered with high gloss silver flake. Car has a visor and its not a problem at all.

The dash in my 37 Chevy p/u is shiny plus I have no sunvisors, the top of the dash is probably only 3 inches wide so not much space for the sun to reflect off of.

I don't regret my painted dash in my truck, but I do regret that I didn't "shield" the gauges as I can see a beautiful reflection of them in my passenger window when I drive at night.

  8. What he said. If the top of the dash is less than 90° from the inside surface of the windshield and shiny it will reflect off the glass any time light shines on it. I painted a Hugger Orange '64 ElCamino interior bright white once and the reflection would sometimes nearly blind you. Anything reflective on the dash will eventually be lighted just right to glare back at you but the dash top on a '58 Chevy would be looking back at you ALL the time, IMHO.
How about some pictures of that big girl?

Cars from the factory with white interiors had the top of the dash painted a dark color to keep the glare down.

I have a blue metalflake dash in my wagon, once in a while there a short time when the sun is going down that it glares a bit, nothing to worry about. Driving at night with the streetlights cascading over the flake - AWESOME

Anyone have any idea about having a Gloss White Dash in an enclosed car? I'm curious too, looking at maybe doing it in my 53 Chevy...
    Thanks.

I've been driving cars with shiny dashes since 1955 and haven't had a wreck yet. Well haven't been anywhere today!
They make sunglasses for people with vison problems. They made dashes shiney because the looked nice.
Next they will make a law all cars have to be flat black.
NO! I don't regret shiny dashes.

White dashes look great ! It was quite popular to do the dash & the garnish rails if you couldn't afford to have them chromed.
I chromed the whole dash in a '46 Chev panel ... the "WOW" response we heard was worth the trouble of throwing a wet red rag on in at sundown.

My `63 Chevy pickup has gloss dark-ish metallic blue all over the interior including the whole dash and I've never had a problem with glare.

I guess it depends on the shape and contour.

Or just paint your dash whatever you want and wear some polarized sunglasses!

Detroit went to dull finish windshield wipers and semi gloss or flat paint on the dash in the early sixties, because of the glare problem.

Some cars are worse than others. It depends on the angle of the dash, height of the driver, weather conditions, where you drive etc.

You can always paint the dash glossy, and if it bothers you, knock down the shine with some 600 wet or dry.
