I just put coolant in my '56 365 for the first time and discovered that there is apparently a coolant outlet pipe on the back of the right bank of the cylinder block... Obviously I am missing a hose... Does anyone have any idea where that hose is supposed to go??? Damn basket case... thanks. Mike
Never seen one in the block, however there is a threaded hole in the head that was used for the heater inlet on some models I think its 1/2in pipe thread. I will look at my engines later and see. PM if you still need info. Davey
This tube extends about 1 1/2" inch off the block, and does not have any threads at all... It is not shown in the '56 manual... Man, I would hate to plug it, and find out that it was supposed to go somewhere important
[ QUOTE ] Davey, PM'ed you, Plan9, let me know if you come across anything... Thanks! [/ QUOTE ] will do mang... im at work, but ill take a look once i get home in a few hrs
Really???? My book shows all heater pipe connections coming off of the water pump... The flow is high enough that it would make sense though... M-
On the 2 390s I have, the outlet comes out the driver side just below the thermostat and the inlet one comes in to the pass side of the rear of the wp. Davey
Yep thats the one..block it off or use it for your heater...I went with 390 heads so I didnt have to worry about it but the 331 I built had the same gig on it and I blocked it off..trust me man you arent gonna ruin anything...What else did you think that would be going to..?? your muffler bearings!! hehehe...
I think it is threaded though and not pressed in,,,shit I forget its been 7 years or so....I believe I used a pipe plug in htere..if not than use a correct size feeze plug..But shit i think its threaded...
Ya, I know what you mean... The cooling design couldn't vary much from the 331... I am just worried about coolant flow... I guess the failure tests in my "Fluid Power" class in school make me gun shy to alter intended cooling paths... I am going to plug it, but since there is no securing barb, I guess I will have to find some way to thread a plug into it...
The original transmission in my 57 had water hoses going to it for some reason. That ould explain what looks like two complete sets of heater hoses.
What type of trans did you adapt to the motor?? Whats the motor in? Looks like the nipple shoud unscrew right out and be replaced with a pipe plug. I would go with an octagon head, brass pipe plug with teflon tape or paste. Looks the problem is solved. Davey
In '55 all Eldorado's, Commercials and dual carb. engines used a water cooled oil cooler for the transmission. One hose went to the water pump, the other attached to the rear of the right head, just under the exhaust manifold. The picture in my '55 shop manual supplement looks just like your set-up. Unscrew the hose fitting, install the correct pipe plug and forget about it. By the way, where in the heck is your starter mounted?
Whoa!!!water cooled Hydro!?? Didn't know that one..Of course I had only one 52 Cad with a 331 hydro and it didn't have that and this Cad 331 in my truck was yanked from a 50's built Kustom 41 Lincoln
Damn, Warbird, thats wierd but would make more sense... Thanks! I am running a Bowtie Overdrives 700R behind it, and the starter is mounted in a wilcap adapter... Mike
I've talked to Pat at Wilcap/Sharpe a few times about his adaptors for the 55-62 Caddys, but have not bought one for my 390. What do you think of the setup? He told me they were $375 + ship and they work great. Dave
This was the first, or one of the first ones he produced (we ended up taking a good number of measurements for him). It bolts up great, but I have never put power through it... The set-up uses a High Torque Mopar Starter, so there is that extra expense... With that said... I would say "go for it" M-
A water cooled hydro; I know it's weird. I've never seen one either, but the '55 manual shows it. Had a funky water cooled heat exchanger bolted to the right side of the tranny with one hose to the side of the block and the other teed into the line for the heater at the water pump. It just cooled the flow from the rear pump so don't know how effective it would have been.
