Anyone running dual 94s on a Mopar flathead?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by drillmastertommy, Mar 5, 2013.

  1. Hey all, is anyone here running a pair of 94s on a Mopar flathead? I am on an Edgy intake with Edgy high comp head and dual cast headers, it's a 218 and I need a little help setting them up.

I'm in the UK so 94 spares aren't everyday items, as such a few home brew mods have to be made. Power valves have been re-sprung to be 4-4.5s.

I could really do with an idea of a starting point for jet sizes, mine had 51's in from previous owner so was running mega rich on idle, drinking fuel and choking plugs real quick. Now I have 40's there's a stumble on throttle but after warming up on idle the plugs are still black.

Anybody know some known to work settings I could try?

    Thanks in advance.

I have no experience with 94s on flathead Mopars, just on flathead Fords. Many use dual 94s on 200 ci bangers, so it sounds like you may have other problems, like leaking and/or blown power valves and/or leaking floats. The stock 94 jets are #51s, and changing to more than a few sizes up or down on any carb is not recommended because of taking the carb out of it's design calibration or operational limits, and #40s are way too lean.
If you're near sea level, I would stay with the 51s until you solve the flooding problem. :)

Using 94s in a dual setup, you'll definitely want to change the power valves to something in the 3.5 range.

  4. Thanks for the tips guys, maybe if I temporarily plugged the power valves I could see if the idle richness disappears. I'm pretty sure they're not leaking but I think I need to check again to see if they are seating properly.

At least now I know I can strip and rebuild a 94 carb in no time after the amount of times I've had these apart!

A fellow in my neighborhood is running a pair of 94s on an Edmunds intake on his 'warmed up' '49 Plymouth. I remember he had some trouble getting it to run right and was screwing around with jets and power valves a few years ago. I can't remember exactly what set up he used but he eventually got her dialed in and she runs great now. Keep plugging at it. It can be done.

  6. Perseverance has certainly been the key with this old truck! 3 and a half years in the making and the only thing stopping me driving is a pair of old carbs!!!!

  7. Carbs apart again this morning and this time I checked thge vacuum chamber below the power valve. It was wet with fuel, which unless I am mistaken means there has been a leak and fuel has been being dragged straight through that way.

I've tested the diaphragms and they are good, valves are now the equivelant of 3.5s and have been fitted and tested for leaks with new seals so hopefully all thats left to do is re-install the 51 jets and shazam! Thats the plan for tomorrow morning anyway.

Fingers crossed. New plugs going in also.
