  3. thesupersized,

You asked for a tech write up on converting a '32 to hydraulic brakes. First I assume you want a low cost straight forward approach (if you want better brakes at a higher cost search "Bendix" here and at fordbarn.com). If that is the case you will probably want to use brakes from a '40 to '48 Ford. Start with the write up for the Model A (on line at
http://members.fortunecity.com/pjsauber/HydraulicBrakes.htm). For the front the spindles are different but the narrative and parts you need are the same. For the rear you will not have a problem with the brake line hitting the shock absorber mount on a '32 so ignore the several ways people recommend getting around this problem on the Model A. I don't think you will need to machine the lip of the drum for clearance (at least I didn't on mine). If you have a Model A you can get a master cylinder mount from Dennis Cling at clingsaftermarket.com, (480) 777-1202, http://modelaonly.com/about_us, or Dave Wilton at mtcarproducts.com, (530) 872-0122. For a '32 you go to Richard Lacy at earlyv8@aol.com, (626) 338-2282 for an adapter that will let you use your original pedals. Be sure to run the spacer rings if you run '40-48 drums with your wire wheels. Also be sure to run safety hubs or safety clips to keep the drums on in case of an axle failure (cheap insurance).

I have stock mechanicals on my 32. I went through them but I would not like to be in a panic situation with them. They are fine for slow cruising around town and on the highway without any panic situations.
I talked to some guys and they said to use 35 ford drums and shoes. they have one inch shoe areas and with the energizer in place work (in their opinion) as well as their car with hydraulic brakes in a similar car. Again here say and rumor. I am not as scientific as others on this post, I would never make an attempt to prove or disprove the merits of one or the other.............but if they were so great wouldnt cars still have them in place now. For a put put machine they are working ok. I have not adjusted mine at all in maybe 500-700 miles of driving.
What is interesting is that the SCTA rule book does not designate that you have to have hydraulic brakes. I think it reads something like.........brakes that are adequate.

I have stock mechanicals on my '32 Stude Rockne. Push and pray....because when they grab, you don't know which way you're going...the car only has 15,000 miles on it and the brakes are in good condition. Just plan ahead....way, way ahead...
