    Hey abone1930,
Last week's episode showed the two "pickers" at a junkyard with a guy with black hair and a beard. This is in western Maryland.
"Bobby" is a friend of everybody around here and his family has owned that yard a loooong time. The yard was there and every moved in around him.

He showed the "rat rod" he had there.Crude and not what we all like at this forum.
He "builds" these things to get a rise out of people.
In his defense,I saw him hammer and dolly a crease out of the right rear fender of a Must*ng fastback once...really good work. He's also a fine mechanic.

The "pickers" didn't get to his good stuff.

I don't know the fella with the white beard that the two goomers bought the Plymouth from.

You may be the guy with some answers, how did they find Bobby, and all the other sellers they feature on the show? The big guy with the white beard and CASE traction engine is my "American Pickers" Hero. Getting another $500. for that '39 Plymouth was the highlight of the series for me. :D

There was an article in the local Iowa paper about them when they first started.

The taller thinner guy is the main owner and shorter guy is a partner.

It is a business period of buy/sell make a profit.
The main guy said he makes about 50K / year. Don't know if it is gross / probably net but really doesn't matter.

I have never seen a poor junk man who deals with cash.

The show is for entertainment which obviosly it is for us old parts guys - entertainment.

The last show where they met the son who had to leave in a hour and called his older Dad who owned the stuff ( wicker chair, weight machine, oil can) .. well the old guy had them figured out whatever they offered he said he'd take double. So goes to show ya - dealers can't do business with dealers uness the motto is screw me ? Naaaa... I screw you.

Dealers hate the thought that another dealer is making any money..........

One of my favorites! My problem would be that I wouldn't want to sell most of what I found.

Yeah that old guy was kind of sad. He should have sold all that stuff long ago and he'd probably be doing OK. The problem is he was a hoarder and coundn't let go of anything. Lots of motorcycle stuff there I'd like to pick through.

I make my half-***ed living buying & selling antique coin op items and advertising pieces and I do 80-90% of my business to other dealers. The best lesson a dealer buddy of mine p***ed on to me was "leave a little for the next guy". Because I try to do that I have a list of people I can sell to on a phone call, so I love dealers making money on me because I'll always be the first guy they check with when they want to buy. Of co****, being a collector will always screw me out of ever having any real money in my pocket!

DON'T close this thread. The Woody story is fantastic! I am wondering what he paid for it because he struck gold this time. When will this or did this air? I definitely want to see the rest of the story on this one!

  13. OK Todd...how much did the wacked woody cost?
I thought I'd seen all of them, but that one's new to me.

    Jerry & Rich ...

I don't know how much he paid for the Woody ... that YouTube clip is all I've ever seen ... in fact, I don't think it ever aired as an episode of the HISTORY Channel's "American Pickers" program ... you may have noticed that the clip was en***led "ANTIQUE ARCHAEOLOGY Pickin' America" ... so it was probably filmed way before they even sold the show to the HISTORY Channel.

Here's another one of their HAMB friendly "picks" ... from Mike's Pickin' Journal:

    REAL STEEL (July 27, 2008)

Just when you think there's no way in hell there are still cars like this out there stuck away in old sheds, hidden in barns from the eyes of the world, one day the Pickin' God shines his bright light down upon you and then you realize these moments are what Pickin' Folk Lore is made of. You heard the stories where One Eyed Paul from Upstate NY found a 32 Ford in a chicken coupe or the time Jersey John uncovered a Cord convertible in a barn in Pennsylvania. It's only then you realize this **** really does still happen and all you can do is revel in the moment when it's your turn. Now don't get me wrong I know this isn't a Dusenberg, but hey this is my first real steel Ford coupe so let me brag a bit... This car has personality its life before me might have been running booze on the back roads of Missouri or drag racing up and down the streets of the small town I pulled it from. Rescued from a tool shed in southern Missouri on a door knock it's going to its new home in Iowa. Have the faith fellow pickers that's what keeps me on the road. We've all chased the leads to nowhere but the people we meet along those paths might have the next bit of information that brings us closer to a HONEY HOLE..

Even though some people bad mouth the guy for "ripping people off" or being a "phoney", he gets as excited as any one of us would when discovering a neat old car........I think he does it as much for the thrill of the chase and the love of neat old stuff as the money. You could see it on his face when he finds something he really likes.

Some of the places on the shows I would swear that they had just driven up to my parent's farm. They would **** to see what they have ac***ulated over the years. It may look amess, but let me guarantee to you that my dad knows where everything is, what it is and what it is WORTH. In sheds, steel bins, under trees, in cars, where ever there is room to put something. Dad loves to show them everything, tell stories about and just generally shoot the ****. But..... NOTHING is for sale! And I mean NOTHING. It's all his pride and joy. These two guys won't know what the hell had just hit them if they even tried to jew the world's oldest and toughest jew master. Believe me, dad knows the origin, history and VALUE of all of it. He may eventually die a poor man money wise, but he will die with the most toys and feel like a very wealthy man. God bless you dad, they broke the mold after they made you.

Hey - Hemi32 that '35 looks real familiar to me.................
cause I bought it from Mr Wolf.
for all you guys that are baggin on these guys - you should know that Wolf has shopped this pilot around for years.
He didnt just happen to win the TV reality lottery. He used his OWN money to make a professional pilot and FINALLY after many years and meetings and getting turned down by OTHER networks - they landed a deal.

It's funny - cause people around here used to call him the "tv star" sarcastically behind his back cause they knew he was really trying hard to get this thing on the air.

I kept on saying - hey - ya never know - Wolf is a charismatic guy and it sounds like a good idea.

Now that they are on the TV - everyone says they know them and no one is laughing now...............

Dont know the other guy but Mr Wolf and his brother are good people.

I no longer have that '35 that I purchased from Mr Wolf.........I sold it and made $$$ off of it.

So does that make me a bad guy?

I am positive the price they sold it to me was a good markup for them......but I too made a bit of $$$.

I set up at shows every weekend. People bring me items all the time for me to purchase.
Sometimes they know what they have - others they ask me and I tell them - I am going to sell this for $50
I have to pay you $25-$30

If you want to sell it on ebay yourself - then go ahead............most times they want the cash in hand and I am there to give it to them.

I see nothing wrong with what they are doing......some say they are preying on the old - but give it a few years and all that stuff is going to be in an estate sale anyway.

How many of us here have had some great finds at estate sales?

So that is ok, but trying to purchase from some old guy is not?

They are not putting a gun to anyone's head.

Mr Wolf can usually be found around town - I just saw him at the hardware store recently and he was complaining about all the people that had to follow him around.

He was trying to get less of a crew so that they would not be so weighted down.

I doubt people here on the board realize how much time it takes to make an episode.........tons of filming..........

An example is that we have about 32 hours of uncut car footage for the upcoming Vintage Torque DVD. This was edited down to 3:45 (plus previews for a total of 4 hours on 2 dvds)

Dont know how much filming they do.............but suspect it is the same kind of deal - shoot 10 hours to get 1.

    OK
    enough defending Mr Wolf

he finds great stuff and turns it - that is his job

if ya'll are jealous - go out and do it yourself and find out just how hard it is.....if you dont like the show - dont watch.

I have yet to watch a complete episode, (I have 2 children that have no interest in that stuff) but what I saw was entertaining. I saw the clip where they made some old man wait almost 1 hour outside while they were in his barn looking around.

Meanwhile the guy outside is just getting more and more mad.

    ha

I thought it was pretty funny.

I hope that Mr Wolf keeps on findin the good stuff..............
and I hope that he comes up to the Torque Fest to find all the good stuff that will be at the swap meet!!!!
