No, but I have been asked to put a price on some of my stuff by passer-bys before. I've always been taken a bit off guard by such requests, it's not very polite. I feel like giving them the age old line "if you have to ask, you cannot afford it anyway". Most of these people likely really couldn't afford it anyway but be careful. It's probably easier to sell a car without putting a for sale sign on it. Don't put a price on something if you don't want to sell it.

I drive my real Henry Ford steel 32 roadster a lot. It looks like it was just dragged out of a barn yesterday so, lots of people ask where I found it (as if there were a bunch more stashed in the same place), or if I want to sell it.

I know people who have thrown out what they thought was a prohibitively large number hoping to scare off the vultures only to discover later that the number was not nearly enough to replace what they had in kind or with something comparable.

"When I'm driving my roadster, I'm the coolest motherfucker on the planet" - Bobbleed

    That's how I feel too.

How much money would make it OK for me to not feel that way anymore? A helluva lot more than the market value of the car, that's for sure.

So, my response to the curious is "it's not for sale". My response to anyone who appears to be legitimately interested and able to purchase it is, "I'm a firm believer that every inanimate object has a price, but my price for this car would be so far above the market value that it would be ridiculous to even mention".

If I throw out a crazy number, it's going to be padded cell, straighjacket crazy not just polka dotted underwear crazy :D

I was offered 11,000 for my 51 Poncho. I couldn't do it. It wasn't stupid money I was offered but more than I thought someone would offer. He started at 7,000 and worked his way up. The greatest catch line "you ever seen 10,000 dollars". Me "Hell NO". "I can show you if you don't believe me." Me "Nah, if I see it you'll probably have a new car."

Some guy from Japan asked to buy my car, I told him 50,000.00. He said O K, but he never showed me any money, I never would have sold him the car even if he did have the money, just some strange international excersize in bullshit. Sunday some one asked me if I wanted to trade for his late model Mercedes, I told him he needed to throw in his house too, but only if it was in a good neighborhood.

I've never been offered "crazy money" for any of my shit, I don't know how you guys do it. There is a price I could put on any one of my cars. I guess since I kinda want to sell them, no one is interested.

I'd like to hear more about the 6 million dollar deal too.

Just pulled into the Milford cruise last year and was wiping the bugs off of the hood. Guy pulls by in a Beemer, rolls down his electric window and asks “How much you want for that thing?” Just his tone and the word “thing’ pissed me off royally. I said “It’s not for sale”. The guy says “Everythings for sale.” I said “Really, how much you take for your wife?” He slides his window up and drives away.

Another time was at a show in Pidgeon Forge. A gal walks up to me and says “I’m gonna buy me a Merc today and I’ve decided it’s gonna be yours”. I said “It’s not for sale and I’m not walking back to Ohio.” She said “With the 32K I’ll give you, you can afford to buy a ticket to fly back.” I said “ Thanks anyway sweetie, but it’s not for sale.

Two years later I’m at the James Dean Run and I hear the gal saying to the guy parked next to me “I’m gonna buy me a Merc today and I’ve decided it’s gonna be yours”. It was the same broad. Come to find out her husband owns a big construction company in Tennessee and he has a collection of 13 of them! She bought the one next to me for 32K.

the problem is most people don't know how to buy a car. "I'll give you $XXXX.XX" has a lot more meaning when you tell them you can be back with cash in an hour, or better yet you are offering while getting out your wallet.

that's how I got a lowball deal on my old 49 sedan. guy was asking $6500.00... showed me the ad form he was going to put it in the auto trader the next day for $7,000.00. made the mistake of telling me he needed the money to get the new Harley he ordered.

told him I'd be back in an hour with $5200.00 and he took it. don't give them a chance to think about it. that's my motto.

I could have gotten more out of the lander than I did.

Sometimes it is just who ends up with it that matters, not the money.

  16. Turned down £25000 (around $40000) for my A roadster a round a year ago.....in may a woman offered me a brand new merc SLK in swap (but it was clitorus silver)....and 2 weeks ago a couple walks up to me and she's going
"buy me this car" to her husband, he asked how much so I says "£30000" (close to $50000) he don't even flinch "that's not bad" he says "Pity it's not for sale then" was my answer....

  17. Once in Las Vegas, a mysterious stranger offered my wife $6 and a Domino's 3-for-2 coupon for one night alone with me. Later, the mysterious stranger sold the story rights to a movie studio for $300 and a case of Pabst. I was portrayed by Demi Moore in the film version.

  21. My first car is a 1969 Dart. I was offered 15K for it a few weeks ago, even though right now it has no engine/trans and looks a little rough...kept telling the guy no as he started at 10K and kept going up by $1000.

All of my vehicles are for sale, don't even have to make a killin. But, I don't build em and they have no historical meaning to me which would make a difference. There are soooo many vehicles out there that I would like to own and drive, I figure why not? I don't blame some of you if you have good memories with them but for me, typically no attatchment. Maybe I just haven't owned the right car. Now, who needs a '32 ford pickup?:D

I agree, anything I have is always for sale if the price suits me! Until I become rich and famous (Hopefully by next month:) I feel the need to play with as many different rides as possible!

Slightly along these lines... but I go to this local cruise here on Saturday nights... mosly an older crowd, but there are some nice cars. Every now and again I see some for sale signs up. Last week I saw a 32 ford rod... painted pink and purple... with billit everywhere. sale price was 55k! I almost shit myself! Then, a guy pulls up nex to my 65 Riv with a 66 Wilcat vert... nice car... looks like it's been sitting for 20 years... for sale sign on it... 10K Again.... a shit started creeping out! I started to think what my humble Riv must be worth in their wolrd if they're getting THAT kind of coin!

when i first got my 53 ford i took it to the pomona swap meet. at the time it was worth maybe $5,000. i had some tire kicker walk up and ask me "how much do you want for it?" i told him its not for sale. he looks it over again and asks "really, how much do you want for it?" i tell him again its not for sale. he comes back with "everything is for sale." so i tell him $25,000. he looks at me and says "you really dont want to sell this car do you?" i just starred at him until he felt really uncomfortable and finally walked away.
