What experience have any of you had with Lizard Skin as a heat reduction and sound reduction spray on. Also, anyone used Lab Metal instead of "bondo"?
I bought the complete set up at Nats South in Knoxville the first weekend in May. Heat process, sound process and the special gun to shoot it. It goes on nice and flows out good. Easy to clean up and looks OK too. But I have not yet driven the car to see how well it actually works. I watched their actual demostration at Louisville a few times ( 2006 and again in 2007 ) and they have a electric griddle going and one side has the Lizard Skin on it, the other side does not. They place a ice cube on each side and the side with no Lizard Skin starts to melt almost on contact. They used up 3 or 4 ice cubes on the non treated side before the ice cube on the treated side melted. I see that main drawback as expense. The two buckets and the gun were $446 on sale. I went ahead and bought it because this is most likely my last frame up build and I was not going to cut any corners now.
I think there was a big thread about this last week. They even had something about making your own. I think it was here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51399&highlight=lizzard+skin
I find a thick layer of bondo on the entire exterior of the car, significantly reduces interior noise!
Lizardskin, IMHO, is the best there is...bar none. I've done two cars with it...and it does what it sez...only better...I wouldn't use anything else (I did a '55 Caddy build thread in April (in four installments), do a search and you can see the results on my Caddy --it was in the number one thread). As for "Lab metal"...I've used it...prolly won't ever again...it's hard to work with...it does not smooth easily, nor build and takes a ton of sanding and repeat applications...besides that it's expensive... I looked for that thread and here it is ... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=256902
Once you know what is in it,Lizard Skin is pretty expensive stuff. If you search here, you will find the info to make your own for a LOT less.
I've used Lab Metal before powder coating. Seems to work well for small areas but I would'nt want to sand and work large areas.
I used it on my 32 sedan and on my F-100 both. Great stuff. I painted it on with a brush. ONLY drawback I've found is that if you are gluing in insulation hard to stick to. Product is good also at running into seams and spots where metal might rub together. I love it. ______________________________________________________ Like I told the kid, Your music not too loud it just sucks!" Once you get there, there you are!
I've used Lizard Skin a few times, along with Second Skin Audio's Spectrum Sludge. Lizard Skin works great for thermal insulation, but Spectrum works great for sound deadening. Use both and I'd bet it works great. On their website, a Lizard Skin coated '41 Willys fiberglass car caught fire. The fire started inside the car, while it was in the garage and didn't do any damage to the exterior or engine. http://lizardskin.com/pages/testimonials4.php
there has been a forum on hotrodders bulletin board an making lizard skin using paint from home depot and glass spheres.
Lizardskin is outstanding. Someone posted a while ago that they brushed it on their car...WRONG...Because of its molecular content it needs to be sprayed for the molecules to expand properly. I phoned Lizardskin after I read about someone brushing / rolling it on and they said the person just wasted a lot of money for nothing. Also, Eastwood sells a spray gun for a lot less than the one from Lizardskin.......My '34 Vicky runs Lizardskin and my roadster gets it next month when I go to Ohio to have my seat done in leather. The upholsterer is friends with the guy that owns Lizardskin......
