another thing, I am not running aftermarket heads on this, I am running angle milled 461's, you are USUALLY ok cutting them to 1.55, but I have heard of the spring seats in camel bumps cracking after a while when they are cut for 1.55's. Sometimes its fine sometimes not, probably depends on core shift. I'd rather not chance it if I don't have to.

the 461's if/when cut do slice into the water ,,, ya MUST cut above with shims in place / in the pocket.

Yes, I drop a .030 shim on the seat. But even if you don't actually hit water when you cut them, they sometimes crack right in the corner of the radius after you use them for a while, which is big pain in the *** when it happens after you have 40-50 hrs of grinding in them! I've run 1.55's in camel bumps, but I prefer not to if I don't have to.

Yup, that's where they would crack if they did. Where did you work? Were you at CHA or something?

With all that info, which some things I have not tried, and my "pocket " was more accomidating, I would go with your choice.. some things aren't meant to chance, even though you could....... I think the ( your ) spring choice is a good one, and will suffice with the #'s, and diameters. Saving the pocket, covering the cam, and so on.... Rock On!

    1.6 's big block O.D.'s in some 461's on a 283 back in 1972.
Life is a bit easier buying stuff (gotta love that word stuff) right out a the box these days.

and angle milling those same heads , (none were available to BUY in 1972)after plugging the cooling holes, then milling them down to next to nothing , there was about 1/4 inch left tween top of bolt hole and surface.

Wow just got back on :)

Thanks for all the info. ( a lot of smart guys here )

Have 2234002A Top-Proline 220 heads with a Howards mech. roller cam that Compe***ion Products recommended about 10 years ago. (Heads are cut for 1.437 dia springs)

Current valve springs are Howard 98441 installed @ 1.750 with closed pressure @ 175 lb
    open pressure is 400 lb @ 1.150

Looking for a 1.437 valve spring / retainer pkg with installed height @ 1.850 so there may be enough room for
.681 lift using 1.65 Howard rockers.
Cam spec.s cam card 1.JPG cam card 2.JPG

Freshened the engine, bolted the heads back on yesterday.

I was washing Brooks pistons and rods and pushing a broom around Bob Crosbies shop at that time. And watching him screw Booth-Arons heads onto MP and gas cl*** motors...I saw some pretty trick **** in those days.;)

Running a glide shifting @ 6900 rpm, going through the lights @ 6300 rpms

Never had any trouble with them, I should replace them any way 10 years old.

Norb with those heads you should have no problem cutting the spring seat for a better spring package.

After larger springs installed, no room would be left to get a socket on one head bolt.
( 1st bolt in the torque sequence )

All ready have to use a skinny 3/8 drive socket to jam between the springs.
