this about sums up my sentiments on vinyl seats and old car interiors...
sure, it hurt like hell the first time i sat on that black vinyl bench seat with no shirt on in the middle of July... but it learn't me real good!
i remember leaning over to beat the top of the dash so i could get the gas gauge working, and the seatbelt buckle burnin' my stomach. it left a mark for a few weeks...

my daily driver is clad in leather, has a few creature comforts... and just doesn't feel "right" to me.

I have a picture of my '29 Coupe from 1961 that I got from the previous owners. It shows a bus seat in it when they 1st hot rodded it. That gave me the idea to put one in my '29 PU. In my PU all I really ended up using from the bus seat was the bottom cushion and the frame work. I shortened the back a little to get the proportions correct. Then using material salvaged fom other bus seats, had the back redone with more cushion. I've driven it for 3 years and don't think it's too bad. On long drives my legs get cramped before my back or **** does.

Here's mine. It is in a '31 pick up. The truck is chopped 4" and channeled 6". I had to get the seat as low as I could so I removed the lower spring and padding and replaced it with a couple layers of Army surplus camping matts. The back padding was removed too and replaced with a layer camping matt to get me more leg room.
Then covered with an Army tarp.
The ride is stiff. 60 miles or so in the seat and I know it. It may be partially due to the fact that the top is so low that I can't really sit up straight.
I'm modifying the bottom as we type to get more drop and padding. I'll post a pic of it later.

I want to thank everybody for all the responses; I don't think I'll have any trouble finding a seat that will work for me, and there have been a lot of good ideas posted here about improving on the idea. Hopefully others will come across this, and find one of the true rarities of hot rodding; a cheap and effective part that can be found in virtually every JY across American and beyond.

The last set of seats I built I made my own frame and used the springs out of a junkyard seat. I was able to get the height I needed and make it fit me and the wife.

Here's what I did to the bottom of the seat last night.
Cut out 2 spots for the ****s. Made a lower floor out of a hunk of plywood. Filled the holes with a cut up bleacher seat pad (cheap and comfy). Put the cover back on. I got another inch and a half of padding without getting any taller.
