The other day I was driving when suddenly I felt one hell of a vibration. Got out and the crank pulley on my '49 Merc. 8BA had come loose. Was able to tighten and limp home. I'm going to replace the front seal and was considering installing Speedway's crank damper while it's all apart. Anyone installed and using one?

However, the 1951 Merc engine crank pulley is tightened only to 45 to 55 foot pounds. The bolt size is 5/8-18 x 1 1/8 inch long and uses a flat washer. According to this TECH Site, there is no torque specification set forth by Ford for the 1949-53 Ford 8BA engine. I have an 8BA engine with a stock 1953 Ford crankshaft in my 40 and am using a 1949-51 Merc wide belt pulley. I torque the bolt to 55 foot pounds. I use a washer. HAS NEVER COME LOOSE IN 51 YEARS.
