Anyone working on or driving a 54 chev conv?

I have a 1954 chevy convertible (have had for years).Would like to upgrade the original 3 speed and rearend.I cannot decide what to use for a tranny.The convertible x-member frame is posing a problem as far as length of tranny I can use.Original 3 speed is about 14" long,so doesn't leave many options,and I don't want to pull the body to change crossmember.Anyone been thru this?
