There's no vacuum modulator on the AOD. The internal pressure that controls shifting is all done by the position of the TV lever. If you run the transmission without the TV lever actuated, the pressure will never get high enough for the trans to shift properly and it will self-destruct in a matter of a few miles. Really. Maybe five miles. Once you have the TV hooked up, it has to operate with the throttle so the shifts are timed correctly. To much TV and it shifts late. Too little and it shifts early. Look at some stock linkages to get an idea of what the ratio is between throttle movement and TV movement. I had an AOD from a Lincoln in my Mustang and it took some fine adjustment to get it to my liking. I started by making sure that when the throttle was at WOT, the TV was nearly at its limit. Too much pressure is better than too little. Then I backed off until it shifted into 4th the way I wanted it. One other thing. In stock form, they shift very soft. A shift kit helps a lot.
Thanks... my donor car shifted fine, but it didnt downshift. (kickdown.) Glad to know it isnt a paperweight!
ARGH - it's a 4R70W gearset... I knew it was a later model tranny... looked up the ratios... AOD - 2.4 / 1.47 / 1 / .67 4R70W - 2.84 / 1.55 / 1 / .70 - Brian
A simple FYI that does not apply here...... you cannot mix up gear ratio sets in OE factory computer controlled cars like swap an AODE in place of a 4R70W. The computer will read a gear ratio error and set trouble codes. carry on
