No, the AOD drive gear is different, I took my '54 cable and the drive from the AOD to a speedo shop and they made a new cable and housing with the correct ends and gear, cost $65.

Jeff's right. But I did use a speedometer cable from a Mustang (I think it was a '69) and it worked on both ends for my '57 F100/AOD. A lot cheaper too as I recall.

Yeah,I ran across that info a while back a cable from a 67-69 Mustang w/C4 will work but if you are using the original 52-56 rear you will want to change the plastic gear to compensate for the gear ratio. For info go to :www.transmissioncenter.net they have a handy conversion chart to figure out the proper gear as well as the gears, look in the AOD parts section.

thanks guys , sounds easy enough . and right now its got a ranger rearend in it ill get the right gear for the ratio. but its getting a explorer disk brake rear soon enough . i might just wait till then to hook it up . and ill go the the pull your own yard here and scavange some gears out of explorers . if i can find one that uses a trany gear not the rear abs sensor .

A little off topic but, Does the gear on the cable end at the transmission have to be coordinated with the rearend ratio or the speedo calibration?
I've got the old speedo cable from my donor car and would ***ume that it was in sync with the rear gear ratio. I used the granada rearend. It looks like your recommendation to use a late 60's mustang or cougar cable will work. I ordered a 68" cable from Napa and will swap the gear at the trans end.

the gears have a diffrent # of teeth on them and they need to be matched i guess you call it to the rearend gear . if you are using the granada rear , and got the cable from the same car you should be good .

  8. i might be a little late on this one. but advance auto has the cable you need. but you do need the speedometer gear end. i made the mistake of buying an 80 dollar lokar cable, not strapping it down properly and it melted on my exhaust.. after tons of research i found the same style cable @ advance for $13..

  10. any one know the correct way to figure what gear end would go into an AOD? i know it has something to do with tire size and rotation of the pinion right?

If you go to : www.transmissioncenter.net in the AOD section they have a section you can click on that will compute the correct gear for you and they have the gears available also.
