I got a aode ford trans today for free. I wanted a aod . I want to use it on a 351w. my question is can this be used on a motor with a carb. this is going in a 39 international I,m going to build. at first i wanted a c4 trans but not having any luck finding one, so I may have to use this one if I can.

You will need a controler to make this work without a Ford pcm. Find a aod with tv linkage or cable. Bob

I think it needs to be pre 1996 to stay away from the electronics

AODE is a good design, the later ones (4R70W/4R75W) got a lot of improvements. Much better than a C4 for most purposes; it requires an ECU ($500-ish) but that gives you laptop tunability if that matters to you.

It can be used with a carb but you'll have to add a throttle position sensor (not a big deal), you will also need an ECU e.g. Baumann (http://www.usshift.com/) and wiring. You'll also need a '91ish Mustang vehicle-speed sensor if you intend to keep a cable-operated speedo, since the ECU's going to need a magnetic VSS signal.

Good enough, but keep in mind:

    a) Every factory AOD is now over twenty years old, so good usable cheap ones may be hard to come by.

    b) If you're building that 351 the AOD had the hollow concentric input shaft arrangement that limits its torque-handling potential. The AODE/4R70W did away with this, and there's aftermarket fixes too, but you might find the parts to build a 450HP AOD put you in 4R70W+ECU price territory.
