I am going to retire the POS Dell that I bought in 2000, I'm tired of viruses getting in even though I Spybot the shit out of it.

Question is what to get in an Apple?

I need word processing, video game capability, music, internet, digital camera compatability (important). Does Apple have a machine I can just plug a memory stick from a camera into and download photos?

  4. I just bought a 15" Mac book pro, great laptop, I've had Mac's for 12 years and love them. Also had a pc once but I had a hard time with it, I'm not saying PC's are bad but just not for me.
G5, I-macs etc. are great too.

I am graphic artist so a Mac is a must, I love them. The only knock is their stuff gets a little pricey. I can't stand my wife's PC, I am always running norton or something on it.

I have a G5 1.8 dual proccesor I have almost three years and not one problem. For you I would check out the new imacs. They should be just right for what you want to do. I don't know anyone with the mac mini, but it's sure is small.

I am not quit sure about plugging in a camera memory stick into the mac. I just download the files directly from my cameras. Everything is mostly plug and play with macs.

Try to stop by a mac store or go to boarders and read a mac computer magazine for some reviews. And just buy the apple warranty, you just never know.

Hope I helped a little, pm me if you have any questions.

I don't know why people have problems with spyware/viruses/etc, I don't....my $300 pieced together PC does fine with windows 2k, mozilla browser/email, and no anti-spyware or antivirus software at all. maybe I just know how to surf safely.

I'm actually a Macintosh contultant, believe it or not. PM or email me, and I'd be more than glad to help you out. Nah, I don't charge anything if that's what you're thinking. I'm not even trying to sell you anything here, just one HAMBer helping another.

This offer is open to everybody. I mean it, if you need me, PM or email me. Hell, I'll even answer general technology questions.

    ~Jason

PS, the G5s haven't been made for several months now.

I just got a new MacPro. Wicked.

Get an iMac. It will serve your needs well. Or if you need a laptop, a powerbook. Get the biggest screen you can afford. It's SOOOOO nice.

We have a pc at the shop, and I hate when I have to use it! I have an old iMac there for iTunes out in the work area but no internet to it. You can't beat metal into submission with some Rob Zombie on 11, right? :D

MacBook Pro is the way to go if you want something portable. One thing I would definitely do is wait until March for the new operating system.

G5's are dead and gone. No longer used in production machines.
It's all about the Core Duo Intel. Most shiping apps have been recompiled and are native, but you can still launch earlier apps with emulation under Rosetta.

Hardware config wise, depends on what you want laptop or desktop. You can get off on the cheap by going with a MacMini and using your old monitor, keyboard, etc. Or step up to the iMac. The new 24" iMac is pretty insane, I've got one on my desk at work.

If you want to spend the extra dough you could go Tower style with quad processing in the MacPro.

Notebooks. 12", 15", 17" in a couple of flavors. I have a 17" that I use as my admin machine.

You might want to have a look at the iLife suite of apps that ships with every Mac. iPhoto, iDVD, iTunes, iMovie, iWeb, and GarageBand.

The nice thing about going Intel is that you can still run Windows if you ready need to. BootCamp will allow you to boot into Windows.

    Hope it helps.

I'm sitting here writing this on my 15" Mac Book Pro. It's tits. Hell I've got some older ones that are still doing great, a cube, a titanium, a couple iMacs. I support about 40 or so Macs on a daily basis as well. I'd recommend the 20" iMac if you want a desktop (best bang for the buck). If you want a laptop I'm a big fan of the Mac Book Pro in the 15" flavor, it's kind of the like the 3 bears (or is that beers :) ) Just right... The regular Mac Book is pretty cool as well, I just got the wife one of those, just put as much RAM as you can in it ( I buy all my RAM from http://eshop.macsales.com/ /... I wouldn't even bother with Boot Camp, I run a program called Parallels and it allows me to virtually run a copy of Windows and any applications that I need to without rebooting.

If there's anything else feel free to drop me a line, I'm pretty much online all the time....

Once you go Mac, you never go back.

Seriously, switched my company over to them 2 years ago and went from playing Mr. Sysadmin every friggen day to *maybe* a monthly problem that can be fixed with an occasional reboot. OSX is ROCK solid - based on BSD Unix and a lot more stable than Windows.

I recently got a MacBook and my wife got a MacBook Pro. If you want a laptop, the MacBook is awesome and a VERY good price. No real need to splurge on the Pro unless you desperately want a non-integrated video card. If you want a desktop, I'd go with an iMac - sooooo simple.

Oh, and if you ever wish you had a PC again - the new Intel macs can even run Windows.

    Now, as to your requirements:
    - no memory stick slot, you'll need an adapter which you'll need on just about any PC. But you will LOVE iPhoto vs. the MS crap for managing photos
    - video games are a potential issue. Not many are made for macs BUT now that they are on Intel chips you may see more of them. If you desperately want to play them, you can run Windows on your Mac and just boot it up as a Windows machine - the downside is you have to buy Windows install disks which is extra $$ if you don't have them already.
    - Everything else you list will have no problems and you'll likely love the Apple way of doing them vs. the Windows way.

I run a MacMini and it's been nothing but a joy. Absolutly no regrets in the purchase. The Mini's aren't up to what you say you wanna do, but Apple PC's are great machines.

    Maybe because he want...

I need word processing, video game capability, music, internet, digital camera compatability (important).

Now you can do most of that with Linux or BSD, but if your time is worth anything at all, it's not worth the hassle.... Especially the gaming... You can get a decent number of games for OSX, name some for Linux?

I absolutely love my Intel 20" iMac. I've been dragging it back and forth to the track for printing pictures week after week.

I also still use two old G4 Macs that just keep plugging along. One of those is at work where almost everyone uses PCs except me and our graphics department. All the PCs that were purchased new at the same time my G4 was purchased have crapped out and been replaced. I'm probably going to have to tell some lies to get them to replace my old Mac.

Any Mac, G4 or newer will serve your purpose. If you can afford one of the intel Mac's i would go that route. I have a Dual G5 2 Gig and i love it. Have been a Mac guy for about ten years now. If you've never worked on a Mac your going to love the interface. Much more intuitive and user friendly than that Windows crap! Bill Gates sux!!!

Yup, macs rule. I have a 17" powerbook, thats a few years old now. I haven't had any problems. At work I run a G5 with an apple 23" cinema display. Apple monitors are awesome... like everyone else said, any new apple will do the job... just depends on what you like. The 17" imac is a cool machine for the money. If you want to spend more, they just keep getting cooler.

The 20" is about $1200 new with an educational discount, you know a student or someone with a student ID, right?

You'll be better off in the long run with a new one (Intel chip) and it's warranty...

I'm hammering away at my 5+ year old 800mhz G3 iBook and running OSx like a charm. This little bastard has been around the world (literally, on a sail boat) and it'll do everything you listed 'cept it might struggle with the gaming. But that's what the trusty Playstation is for.
