Make sure it has a long neck, Ostritch feathers and a hole to hide in when you get your manure-mobile perfected. Gary

Having a lot of overdrive is not always a good thing. If you overdrive so much that you are lugging the engine for a given speed your fuel economy goes in the toilet.

  4. I didn't read all 300+ posts, but here's an idea, quoted from someone else. I may build a 283 with '57 two barrel heads.

"Those (heads)on a small engine up to a 327 will net you unreal mileage and with their 52CC combustion chambers and small runners will increase compression/and most importantly increse runner air flow speeds....
that will give a MUCH crisper low and mid response and only cost you a slight loss at the last 1000 RPM on the very top end....
    I used those on a 283 in a 39 chevy once[2900lbs]... with a 327/350HP cam and netted 20-25 MPGs...
they work best on a 283"

  5. last night I was reading a 1965 rod&custom, the t-bucket called the GATTI was powered by a 1964? tempest 4 banger with a side draft weber and kool lookin bolt on's,even had the floating rear-end under it.......way ahead of his time

  6. The super heated and vaporized fuel trick is what they used in the caddy powered tanks in WW2... Use the gas we get now, and your carb will be clogged with burnt varnish in 100 miles... Anybody wanna try it? just drill a hole at each end of you exhaust manifold, run the fuel line through it and up to your soon-to-be-goobered carb.

I wonder if the oil companies will take what varnishes your carb up out of the gasoline?

You could have an extremely efficient engine that still only gets 4 mpg.
Do you mean that, or are you looking for building a "sufficient" hotrod*?

*(Usually looked at as a "street rod" with less emphasis on the "hot".)
