Dang I dig that jackrabbit decal, that would look period correct on my mid 70s nova?

  3. Ya see OILNRUST, it was/is a young man's sport. Thing is, some of us have been doing this since BEFORE anyone called it "traditional". We WERE young..then.

If you want to be real traditional run a set of tin covers painted, they were "Traditional" before the aftermarket finned aluminums came along.

Real tradition has the valves in the head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its a shame they don't give an "Olds in a Olds award" I say use them, they will look cool and WAY better than the stockers or Mondello cast covers. It's about as traditional as you can get on a 350 Olds engine. Very good engines too. The 350 Rockets run pretty good.

I had a set of Hardin Marine finned covers for a 350 Olds on the wall for years that were very cool. They were just MT's that were cast with a diffrent name. Long gone now... Shoulda took pictures.

I understand Axle has one or a set of the very early Thompson valve covers for a Pontiac just like the ones on Challenger I. The ones completely finned on top except where Thompson is written out in small letters. Maybe someone that knows him could persuade him to post a picture or two. They are without doubt the prettiest covers anyone ever made for a Pontiac V8.

I have two pairs of them for a 429BBF. One set needed a valve cover spacer as they were just too low profile. The other set was good.
But I would not use them again. Just like Cal Custom covers, they were leakers and I got tried of cleaning up the oil. Could never seal them.
I now have Blue Thunder ribbed rocker covers.

Any pics of Offenhauser's on a 350 Olds out there?

  15. I still can't believe all the concern about "traditional" things. You've got a Olds 350 motor so the whole traditional thing is gone already, I don't mean that that's a bad thing, it's just that the valve covers you use don't really matter. If you like them, use them. I've got a 350 center bolt valve cover motor and I looked a long time to find a set of valve covers that looked more old school, I could have gone with the adapters and used valve covers with the 4 perimiter bolts but I wasn't trying to fool anyone, I just wanted them to look good. I think they do. If you get the "look" you're after and you like em, go for it. Traditional is as much a state of mind as anything, if it looks, sounds, and smells like a hot rod, it probably is a hot rod. Build it and keep the sport alive, don't worry about if someone else considers your car "right".

That's basically what I'm looking for. Finned aluminum, don't even need a logo. Can't seem to find anything for my 350 Olds. Yours look great!

If you want the traditional look, you gotsta pay the traditional price. Look at prices on that stuff back then, and multiply by inflation, hot rod parts were EXPENSIVE

  20. A company called RPC.( www.racingpreformancecompany.com ) Google it . I got mine at a swap meet in Jefferson Wisc. in Sept. $ 120.00 New in the box. I'm sure they had 350 Olds stuff to, pretty good quality, nice and heavy. Good luck

You know what.....if you like them, run them. Don't wait for the "Traditional Police" to declare them UN-traditional and then decide that you don't like them anymore because of other people's opinions. I was never really a fan of the M/T valve covers because they just seemed to be everywhere for the longest time. Then I stumbled upon this set here in St. Louis that had originally been used on the Jim Kirby '68 Camaro Funny Car which also was driven by **** Harrell for a short while. They can even be seen in some early pictures of the car. I had never even seen a set of these breathers before I purchased these valve covers in which they were already installed. I had 'em on the '55 and now they're gonna be put to use on the Biscayne.

As far as Pontiacs go, there's 3 different M/T covers I've ran across. I have 2 of them:

I have the style in question on my '64 wagon, the other ones shown here are earlier than that, and may end up on my 60s themed '37 Pontiac if I don't decide to use my Offys instead...maybe I'll trade off from time to time...

I'd run them in a second if they would just start casting them without that stupid looking blank rectangle.

I had a pair of flat-top M/Ts on my 389 Pontiac motor...milled off the letters and epoxied a pair of 1963 "421" tags in place..much better.
