Just watched a movie on TCM the other day from the 30's or 40's and a kid was driving a cool tub with a banger I think

I believe that this answers the initial question. I love looking through these old photos and seeing how these cars were assembled solely based on what worked for them.

On my old laptop screensaver many years ago.

    Hello,

I was fortunate to meet several folks in the Pomona area of So Cal during our photo shoot days. My wife and I had seen the Phaeton earlier and made an appointment to meet for a photo shoot. I took some quick photos to remember to call and set up the photo day. In the meantime, I had gone to the publication offices and showed them the preliminary shot of the Phaeton. They liked it, knew of the builder/owner and wanted to run a feature. I asked for a centerspread and they said no... “It is an old hot rod, done well, but lacks color…” was the reply… ha!

So, despite knowing they would not give me the full two page center spread, it deserved some color shots as well as a well written story to go along with the photos. We met and decided the location would have to be something else. Wide open, no hinderances of poles, big trees or any garish buildings. They knew of a place well known to their friends and so, we drove to the spot.

Wow, what a spot, but as one can tell, it was thick fur lined jacket weather as a recent storm had dumped snow on the local So Cal mountain range. The cool wind made the temperature very chilly and it was hard not to have crispy fingers to grip the cameras.

I shot this one color photo and thought it should be the color center spread as it gave off those “vibes” as a good looking hot rod in a place to wonder and be amazed… It would be many years later, a candidate for “coolest picture on the HAMB.” Or “a cool roadside attraction!” But, despite the weather and surroundings, to me, nothing took away the aspect of one of the nicest builds of a rare hot rod.

Yes, one can see the bright red interior just peaking over the edges of the Phaeton. My idea was to include a ¾ angle shot of the open doors, showing the complete red interior. And show what was my idea of the “best” photo to showcase everything, the Phaeton, the surroundings and overall attractive to anyone’s eye if and when the centerspread was opened.

    Note:

The final outcome was this photo chosen for its “color” and angle by the editors.

But, what happened to the selected hot rod + dramatic surroundings photo? They gave me a color page, but the surroundings were just peanuts and not needed… so the story implications go… My idea of a centerspread with the red interior and both doors open along with the above mountain/phaeton photo was rejected. Two color + photos on a full two page center was not going to work for the magazine. YRMV

Well, at least there was a color photo page… traditional color pattern (body, fenders, top), white convertible top and the stance of a hot rod all worked out as one cool phaeton. Thanks, J

I think I read (here on the HAMB?) that the cover car was restored to original after the magazine. So, evidently they can be traditional hot rods and then boring again.

The Richard Graves cover car version existed for a very short time. When my friend Glenn found it, I believe it was either in pieces or back on an original chassis. He restored it into the car you see pictured above. It wasn't until someone recognized the license plate number at an Early Ford V8 club meet that he found out it was the old cover car. Glenn is a hot rodder at heart, and every time he sees my black Fordor he says he should give the phaeton it's old hot rod stance back.

Here's a couple of very fast tubs going at it for high stakes on Muroc dry lake in 1932.

That’s the next thread: “Can fordor 32’s really be traditional hot rods?” Both roofed and roofless versions.
