I think the one thing people fail to understand is that salvage ***les are not based on the extent of damage, but the repair costs compared to the value of the car.
in comparable condition with the same exact damage a 64 Biscayne 4 door would be totaled while a 64 Impala SS with a 409 would not.

I bought a late model Chevy Cruze w/salvage ***le for my Grandaughter for $9500 from a friend that has been repairing wrecks for years (he's real good at it). Light damage to right front but air bag deployed thus a total by insurance company. She rear ended a car & the insurance company paid $13K. Go figure. Now she's happy with a Car Max Mustang w/good ***le.

The crooks did this in CA as well. The cops called it a surgical strip. The original thieves removed everything piece by piece without damaging anything and them dumped the car were it was sure to be recovered and bought it back at the insurance auction. They them reinstalled everything and sold the car. The auto theft guys tried to get the insurance companies to crush the shells of the surgical strips to stop the practice but the insurance companies were only concerned with recouping some of their losses. Don't know if it is still going on today here in CA.

The last two of my driver trucks were bought at auctions totaled. One had a salvage ***le and the other clear. Insurance and value are no problem as I drive them until they are well used and want to many parts for me. I bought the last one a 2013 Ford heavy half ton f150 extended cab 4x4 with an 8' box 4 years ago. It had 22,000 miles on it and I had less than 20 grand in all fixed.

They also used to hit the towing yard auctions and buy everything they could get their hands on. Around the corner from us, is a small condominium complex, and it is virtually all Slavic people that rent there. I think a church sponsors them, sets them up in housing, get them all kinds of State/Federal aid, and most of them don't "work". It's been this way for 30 years now. There is one guy that always has a new or different mini-van he's working on or rebuilding. I'm guessing he sells them to his own people, who probably are't even aware of salvage ***les. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

I bought a 67 Chevy 11 from a salvage yard in Flagstaff, AZ. that had been abandoned on the street ,because of a blown freeze plug. Because it came from a salvage yard it had a rebuilt vehicle ***le.
Rust free 2 door post car for $125.00 in 1985 .SCORE!! Who cared about a salvage ***le.

Guys - this is getting off the rails with all the late model stuff.
It gives a green light to post more off topic cars/ trucks on other posts so have to close it..
