Putting a 90 S10 NWC T5 in my A so I have read pretty much every thread twice and still not sure if shifters are interchangeable. I know they have different mounting locations so I would presume they are different. I have read you should install the shifters that have stops built in. Any you should avoid? or recommend?

Also, which direction does the D Bond pilot bearing go? Stepped side facing motor or flat side?

All the GM "square" pattern shifters interchange. You can even use a "rectangular" Mustang shifter by re-drilling the two front holes and cutting off the extra. Not sure if the Jeep shifters will work with the GM - they have an extra mounting bolt - I suspect they do.

If I'm thinking clearly (and it's 00:30 here), the flat side faces the trans so the bushing can't push through...but check clearances.

Thanks Ernie, so I should be able to use any camaro or S10 shifter? Fleabay has a bunch of options. Anything to stay away from? Just want an inexpensive shifter with the stops so I can bang my gears without fears.

Any reason people go with the Astro Van clutch disk? My truck bell and pressure plate used a 10in disk before not an 11.

Yep - any camaro or s10 shifter. The cheap-o Mustang shifters work too with a bit of drilling & cutting...straight-forward.

Most with the Astrovan disk are due to their combination. Use whatever fits your combo or have a custom one made. One of these days, maybe I'll do a clutch disk chart or something...

as far as I know NONE of the OEM shifters include shifter stops, so a used aftermarket or some fabrication seems to be in your future.

Is that true that the T5 does not need stops since they have the internal rods like the guy on Fleabay says? The ad says its not true which is opposite of everything I have read. Any thoughts?

And I thought I had a 10in clutch disk but after measuring I found its an 11in. This came with the truck trans that I am using the bell/hogshead and the clutch basket. So does a 10 inch work or should I try to find an astro van clutch disk which so far has eluded me. Anyone know where to find one?

The SVO Mustang`s came from the factory with a Hurst shifter with adjustable stops built into it. That`s what I am using in my truck.

Most if not all Ford T5 shifters are interchangeable, the GM ones I believe have a different shape to them, more squared off compared to the Ford ones which are rectangular.

Putting a t-5 in my A truck now I used the stock s-10 bottom half of the shifter cut it off just below the lock nut and found and old shift handle out of an old grain truck at the junk yard and welded it on, same diameter and tapers at top .Worked great !!

i would see if you could get a steeda tri-axe or a pro 5.0 shifter used off ebay or a mustang website. then drill and cut it. Has shift stops and short throw. I love the pro 5.0 in my 01 mustang and the steeda tri-axe in my 67 mustang.

What disc to use depends on what diameter the pressure plate is, and what the input shaft spline count is. Sometimes the diameter of the center hub is an issue, but most of the time it isn't.

For example, if you need a 14 spline 11" disc, then you will find that in a 1985 Astro van with 4.3L.
If you need a 26 spline 11" disc, then look at a 1980's V8 Camaro.

Not so sure that is true, like you, everything I've read says they need stops, to avoid bent forks or ruined synchros ...................... but then again I'd be hesitant to bang shifts with an S-10 trans anyway, I have a NWC Camaro box with S-10 tailshaft in mine and although I do run it hard from time to time I don't power shift it. It's got a Pro-5 shifter with the stops made for a Camaro/Firebird, so yes they are interchangable.

For the $20 extra I'd go with the stops...................just for peace of mind if nothing else.

There are no real internal stops in the T5. The Tremec TKO series DO have internal stops. I wonder if the folks saying T5 have internal stops are confusing the mfgr name, Tremec, here???

Bringing back an old thread here because I'm about to undergo the t5 swap in my '51. These threads always just end without any resolution so even when they pop up in searches there are no answers. So, I have an s10 t5 and I got a shifter stub/base plate from a jeep t5 since they have a much better shifter than the s10. Instead of trying to adapt the entire jeep base plate to the s10 trans., would it be possible to swap the shifter stub that goes into the shift rail from the jeep base to the s10 base?

Yes, but the distance from the ball on the bottom to the pivot pin in the shifter is right on one inch between the Jeep and the S10. I make a 1" spacer to fit under the shift tower, with a 2 1/2" hole for the shifter to fit through. This also gives you a much shorter shifter throw than the S10 shifter

I use aluminum, and cut a 2 1/2" hole where the shifter goes. The dimensions are 1" by 3 1/2" by 4 1/2"
