Actually, American Motors made cars until at least 1979, and as stated earlier, Dodge is NOT dead.

My Uncle has fully restored a 29 Old's Phaeton, can't remember which edition (deluxe I think) but 1 of only 9 built and his is the only one known to exsist. Has been in many mags and books. Good thing is, he isn't afraid to drive it. This one won't be going to me when he passes I'm sure!!

My uncle owns a Maxwell. I drove it last July.

The body has been 'customized' a bit. I'm behind the wheel, my son beside me, and my uncle, the owner is looking on. This car has been in my family since the 20's.

Great thread. I've photographed car shows for 30 years. Seen some real rarities. One of my favorites was a very original Rockne sedan which was made by Studebaker. Another was a Roamer, a predecessor to Duesenberg. Here's another oddball, a 1903 Columbus High Wheeler built in Columbus ,Ohio.

"White" Automobile company is dead and gone. The only one i ever saw had been converted to a hay conveyor belt that put hay up in a barn loft...

Nope, the Whites are not gone. A friend is restoring a 1914 touring for a customer. It originally had 18 volt electrics, had a starter/generator that automatically kicked in if you stalled it. The AACA museum has a '31? White car? that was special built for a woman Dr. She had owned an older White from new. When she was ready for a new car White only made trucks. She convinced them to build her a suburban/stationwagon looking car on a truck chassis. They also have a Pan, very rare but not extinct.Great thread, I'm glad someone dug it up from the grave.

  17. I have to recommend the book; How Detroit Became the Automotive Capital.

It's a great read and goes into alot of these extinct companies. It's even better if you're familiar with the Detroit area because it goes into a bit of local geography too when talking about the various companies and the auto barons.

There were a LOT of marquee's! I don't know of any that specifically have no known surviving examples though, but I bet there's quite a few.

I know that Sears and Holley both made cars way, way back when. Any of those left? How about Maytag?

Not to get off topic but here are the whereabouts of a majority of the Tuckers with Pics. I've heard one had a 4x4 chasis under it at one point but I've never actually seen pics of it and its one of my favorite cars....

Great topic! If anyone gets bored...there is a wealth of very cool and very detailed information on this subject. www.detroityes.com there is a discussion titled "Old Car Factories" with pages and pages of defunct car companies. Pictures, ads, maps, stories from employees and all. It's really pretty cool. Also a lot of other neat Car related shit. I'm from SW Ohio and have lived in metro D for 10 years now. Been to the Packard plant and cruied around looking at the historic sites many times. It's a shithole for the most part, but makes you think of the innovations of the past. Hell, I wish I could get a smoke stack from the Jeep plant they're tearing down in Toledo. It would be way cool to have one of those in my yard with the OVERLAND name spelled in the brick.

    Masdaslam,
I'd be VERY interested in seeing your picture of the Nadig truck.I do have one picture of a Nadig Truck, but since it has what appears to be a radiator, it is probably not an electric vehicle.
    I can be e-mailed at bobheitz(at)juno.com

Okay or OK trucks built in a plant located in Okay, Oklahoma. Okay is a tiny town just northeast of Muskogee. The last time I was through there you could still see remnants of the factory (it later became an aircraft plant of some kind). I seem to remember that none were known to exist until a tattered remnant was dug up when the Verdigris River was widened to become part of a navigation project. The plant was just 100 yards or so from the river. Don't know if the survivor story was true nor what became of it if it was true.

Geronimo's were built here in Enid. Plant burned a couple years into production. This is the only one known to exist. It was found in a field in Kansas after years of searching by the Enid Antique Auto Club. The club restored it and it is shown localy and driven in parades.

    Attached Files:

  29. Maytags and Mason-Maytags were the result of a joint venture between washing machine magnate Fred Maytag and two brothers from Garner Iowa, Fred and August Deusenberg (yep, the same ones). A couple hundred were made in a Waterloo, Iowa plant from 1906-11, and I think only a couple still exist.

Maytags were reportedly very powerful and light and won several national races and hill climbs. The company folded in 1911 and the Deusenbergs went on to bigger things.
