    Yeah, Butt!! [IMG] [IMG]

THAT'S the kinda rides that I was seeing around East Detroit back in the early-to-mid 70s when I first started getting into cars! That Impala looks like it coulda been built at Harold's place!

    Your Dad's car???

    Cool! [IMG]

That's about the same era that Harold and his buds were building similar cars here. The photo I posted on page one of this post yesterday was taken in 1975. That chopped 67 Pontiac was the coolest thing I had ever seen at that tender young age! (I was 7 years old when that photo was taken...standing behind my aunt who took the photo!)

Interesting that there were cars like that in other parts of thecountry about the same time. Where were these pictures taken?

(I remember several 63-64 Impalas with cool paint and LOW stances hanging around the alley back then...along with a really wild Chrysler something-or-other...I think it was maybe a 68 Fury, but it was so modified I can't say for sure...long, low and several shades of blue with a chopped roof, skinny whites and chrome knock-offs. It was LOUD too...open pipes I'm sure!)

Thanks for sharing those pics!!! [IMG]

I Love lowriders. Just as much as I do hot rod's and kustoms so sue me. I will see if I can find some pics. I have no clue if there are any sires layitlow.com is they only one I have ever found. I have been out of it for a few years now but I still got a good stash of hydro's. Theres Nothing like bustin' a three wheel around the corner so don't knock it till you try it. drew

butt those photos are great. Your mom's impala looks like it has the back half of the top vinyled- I haven't seen that in a long time. I grew up in Palm Springs / Indio and can't seem to get some of those old cars out of my blood either.

What I remember is white fake fur, shag carpet, light bars that flashed with the 8 track, small chrome chain steering wheels, dingle balls and lace string curtains, fancy name or club tags cut out of brass sheet and polished or chromed in the back window, totaly stock bodywork with mainly grills and bumpers customized, and flake or candy paint. Usually Caddys or Impalas. Still have them here today but they're mostly Monte Carlos with latino nudes airbrushed on the hood and trunk lids. Now they bag them but back in the late 60's early 70's they just cut coils, used spring compressors and used lowering blocks. That's why they only drove 15mph.(No suspension to speak of). You needed to go slow so you could spot the manhole covers before you dragged on them. My Chevelle was a late model mild low-rider when I first got it. When I think low-rider, I think of Cheech & Chong or "Billy" from "Gone in 60 Seconds"! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

That was going on hard core on the front range in Colorado when I was in high school.
The low riders were all ways cool to me because they dug my 58 Chevy and greasy hair.
Some of them had some nice rides too.
On cat they called Tarzan had a stock 38 Buick that ran like a champ.
He lowered it and pinstriped it and that was it.
That car was in incredible shape.
Man this thread brought back some memories

praisethelowered, yeah i guess that was a trend back then with the half vinyl top.

smokin joe,ive always heard of those light bars, but yet to ever see one in real life and the way it works.from what i understand it was a pretty cool "effect"

the 64 and the 57 were both "lifted" front and back but the rest of the rides from what i understand were just lowered. the 57 had a 396 and a four speed.

you know, ive always thought of these cars i posted pics of as lowriders, but Dr.J's right, there really just mild type customs kinda like the cars some of us are building now. ,i guess it was your zip code as to what determined what it was [IMG] [IMG]

ok,im done talking about lowriders for the next six months.

Used to get the light bars from JC Whitney. They probably still carry them. All the stereo shops had bigger ones for the home system too. We tore them apart and customized them to fit the cars. The whole top of the console around the Hurst shifter in one of my cars flashed colors with the music. So did the glove box door and a custom panel the full length of the bottom of the dash. Damned girls would get so fascinated with the lights and tunes it was hard to get them to really appreciate the feel of the crushed velvet upholstery and fake fur if you know what I mean! I was just going to say, before seeing this post, so I'll say it anyway. If any of those cars, especially the '57 ventured south of Florence Blvd, it would have been considered just one of the nicer "Bellflower style" customs. The '62's even got the pipes, the "Bellflower" pipes
Except I don't remember anyone actually calling a car a
"Bellflower Style Custom". We call them that now in the custom car history stories, but then they were just "customs".
We did call the pipesbehind the rear wheels "Bellflowers", just Bellflowers, with no "pipes".
People didn't spend so much time explaining what they were doing with their cars then, they just did it. and other people said "that's cool" and maybe copied it, or just didn't say anything and walked on by.

you were there, alot of the shit you type,(even tho some dont listen to cuz their worried about red wheels and shit.)is realy a cool perspective of the "scene" that alot of us didnt know about.

i still remember the story you told about getting new gravel all over your new JC pennys shirt...

a good book on the LA area in the 60's till ??? told from your prespective would be cool

Im only 29, but I remember the old school growing up in Richmond CA(Bay Area). Truspokes and 5.20s with buffed out white walls. Monte carlos were big. There were like 4 hydraulic shops in Richmond alone. I still have my deep dish chain steering wheel.Cruised San jose, 23rd, even went out to grafitti in motown.since the mid 90s the scene got to commercialized. I havent bought a lowrider magazine in over 6 years. I have some early lowrider magazines from like 81. If you guys wanted i could post some pics from them. The scene turned into who ever has the most money type of thing. To win a lowrider show you have to have over 80 Gs in the car.Anyways I love traditional hot rods because they represent the style that I fell in love with as a kid

i wanna know,..my first love of automobiles was due to the fact of my pops,he was a member of the east los car club the Imperials back in the late 60's...
he's moved on and is into other stuff, but ive always loved traditional lowriders,(not the shit you see in the fagazines).,anyways my 56 isnt really a "custom" its really just a early style lowrider, back when east LA was getting their grove on,,,

anyways, just wondering if there are any websites dedicated to old school lowriders,,,

i dont want to talk to idiots in there metal flaked cutlass, but interested in the old vatos from back in the day....

[/ QUOTE ] If you want go ahead and take over the message board on my site if you want - Its not used much and wide open to whoever wants to take it over @ http://www.ekustom.net - go to CAR YAP! [IMG]

Butt- Great post holmes and love the pics of your rides!

    DrJ-You nailed it,,good write up!.

I grew up looking at a magazine called "Klassics & Kustoms" wich really featured more 'traditional' style lowriders. If I remember correctly,,Mr Barris had something to do with it also. I will scan in pics of some of these cars in the next couple of days cause these are exactly what you are all looking for..I remember even most of the wild/wayout kustoms being lowriders..as a kid I used to dream of becoming a 'Lowrider',,most of all,,moving out to Cali and becoming an 'Imperial'....(some dreams never come true..so call me a "Dreamer') But I use to watch Chico & the Man and just waiting for them to flash the 'Gypsy Rose'...and the Cheech & Chong movies. Shit I can't count how many of those I popped over the years cause couldn't get enough of the 'Lifestyle' or should I say 'Culture'...There was only one lowrider i recall from my area that was a Buick that was a true traditional style lolo..In fact, the guy hasn't changed a bit. Even his current ride has Tru's w/skinny whites. He has schooled me alot over the years as far as kustoms & lowriders.

Do any of you know of the first documented car and what it was?

How was the car lifted and who built it?

    Sorry no prizes this time!!

I think Ron Aguirre's corvette may have been the first "lifted" car.
