Me and a friend drove 2 hours west to look at a 4 Indian Chief frame that had never been cut on. When i walked in his shop i could tell it was cut on from 15 ft away. O well it was a cold day , good road and a good friend.

years ago loaded up with mom, dad, and two big brothers to buy a '55 chevy p/u that dad had been talking to a guy about for a week. he asked about rust, owner said "no rust" dad knew better and asked again "really no rust at all?" owner again says "no". we drive 3.5 hours pull in the drive and the thing is nothing but rust. the owner took off the door panel so he would have a place to spit his tobacco when it was cold out so he wouldn't have to roll down the window. dad made us get back in the car, he had some words we weren't supposed to hear. (like we didn't hear them when he busted a knuckle or a gnat landed in the paint.) good times. strange thing is i would like to have that truck now.

The HAMB is an awesome tool to prevent these catastrophes. Since I was sixteen of something was far away I would find somebody close to go pre-look for me. Years ago I asked a friend of a friend to go look at a 55 Bel Air for me. He told me what I had been thinking. He said it was junk. A couple of years later a guy pulls up in a 55 to look at 32 5w my dad had for sale. I start looking at the car and start asking specific questions. I figure out its my buddys friend and yep, its the car and its a cherry. He makes an offer on the 32, dad declines, and he leaves. Dad asks me after he leaves if that was the 55 I was chasing a while back. He calls back the next day and says he will take the 32 for the asking price. Dad says "Nah, I think I'm just gonna keep it". Guy flips out on the phone and said we wasted his previous day. Hot rod karma, gotta love it!

Drove the entire state of indiana with a rented trailer to pick up a '50 ford that "could be on the road in a weekend" to find a hacked together, paint brushed on, chop looked like he let his dog chew the cuts p.o.s. On the bright side I had some good BBQ!

Ha! Ha! Ha! It was a P.O.S. it was still there in 69 when I went to look at it but then it had a sign that read, "ran when parked".

Few years back a dude strolls into our swap space in Jefferson WI. and asks if we buy Mopar stuff.Yep...sure do,we says.He starts telling us what he has and how he needs to get rid of it all.
We exchange numbers and a few weeks later gather up some cash and guns(it was a lot of cash...lol)and make the 5 hour drive to see what there was.Meet the guy at one of his places and it's late 60's B-body heaven. But these 5 cars are not for sale. The parts are out at the farm.Head there and it's a goldmine.4-speed consoles, tach dashes,6-packs,hemi stuff, air grabber hoods stacked like cordwood. Every time we asked about a part..not for sale.Went to his shop.More of the same. Not for sale. The guy gave us the "museum tour". I doubt he had any intention of selling anything.17 hour day with nothing to show for it.I imagine folks northeast of Fondulac WI. know this guy,f he's still around.

There not a bad stories, Had talked to this guy about a 40 Buick Super 4Dr back in the late 60s, asked all the usual questions, car was reported to be (perty good) Drove 4 hrs on the Pa. Pike, and finally found the car. Looked sad, had a cracked motor but it ran, interior was sad, but the price was $350.00 Towed her home. 3 days later, with a new water pump and intake gaskets, it ran as good as new, had 34000 on the clock. The entire interior had covers installed since new, even the door panels, and were falling apart. With them removed I had a brand new interior. A lot of washing and polishing and it looked like a million bucks, and a new set of whites really did it up. 15 yrs later, I sold her to a Buick Dealer and she set in his show room for a couple of yrs. Sometimes you win, some times you loose. Iceman

I've got a story from the other end...
A friend was selling (beleive it or not) an early 70's Pinto FC. The car had a little history to it and a buyer was found.
We agreed to meet south of Chicago, and my friend had asked me to haul it down there.
While running through the wonderful roads in Detroit, the ch***is literally broke in half. We stopped and found a couple of skids from a lumber yard to prop it up, braced the ch***is with a 4' level I had in the truck and tied the body down to it all with some rope.
I'll tell you, I was ashamed of what we had done.
When we got to the meeting place, we found the buyer and explained the whole trip down. He didn't seem to care what had happened, looked the car over and took it.
I guess the history behind this beast meant more to him than it did to my buddy.
Sometmes, on a rare occasion, it's not entirely the sellers fault...this proves it.
And yeah, I've been on my share of wild chases for cars, mostly OT, race related stuff though.
