Are wheel pants allowed on Lakesters?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by LongDistanceOperator, Jul 24, 2011.

  1. Or any open-wheel Land Speed racers? The question is for the upcoming contest in the Plastic Model social group. If they are not allowed now, were they allowed in 1964 or earlier?

    Thanks. Lee

No. It wouldn't be an open wheeled car if the wheels wern't open. Enclose even one wheel and it becomes a Streamliner.

  3. Yeah that's what I thought. :(

I picked up a 1/18 model of a V-1 "Buzz Bomb" on clearance at the hobby shop today. Sand all the bumps off and it makes a cool lakester body. I just need to find wheels and tires in the right scale.

    Thanks.

I thought they could have the rear wheels enclosed.... unless they've changed the rules of late.

You may have seen pictures of Bob Rufi's prewar car. Single seater body, open front wheels, pants on the rear wheels. I believe it was classified as a streamliner. I have also read that the wheel pants caused the car to become unstable and crash.

Google "Bob Rufi streamliner" and you can find a couple of images with the wheel pants installed. They may have been a bad idea, but the car looked great that way!

  8. Some coupes can have the wheels brought inside the body on the rear, but never on a lakester.
