I'm in the final stages (wiring ) of a 13 year build and it is a bit of a let down. When I was young driving was "it" but over the years building is my pleasure. I enjoy the constant challenge of creating and solving and of coarse showing off my work. 100_1578.JPG

I really enjoy the build process, but driving also puts a smile on my face. I don’t even need a destination, just rolling down the road in something built with my own two hands provides a tremendous sense of satisfaction.

The poll should have “both “ as an option…

Ya know... that's kind of a loaded question. When I'm building I love it, but can't wait to get 'er on the road. When I'm driving one of my creations, I love it, but make mental notes on what I'll do to improve 'er when I get back to the shop. Having several cars helps in a way, because I'll work on one and have another to drive in the mean time.

At 77 I am a driver only. Well, minor servicing of course, but no major work for me. IMG_0162.JPG

Today, I should be a "builder" in the garage but here I am responding to an online poll!
The last three or four old cars I've owned have been what most would call "un-finished" when I sold them. I tend to get cars to a reliable driving stage first. I don't ignore the cosmetics but our '39 Ford Standard sedan had around 30,000 miles on it when it was sold and although it was mostly painted, the hood, side panels and trunk lid were still in black primer at that point. Goal is to get 'em on the road and then refine/finish as time goes by so I guess that might make me lean a little more toward driving. My present '64 Chevy II project might be skewing that a little though. It's been apart for around ten years now.
If nothing else, at least now I'm a little more aware of where my priorities lie. Or not...!

  6. most of the people I know consider me to be a builder and not a driver.

I enjoy building a car or truck and driving it. Normally if I build one it becomes my daily driver.

Getting back to it I got an idea that I am more of a builder because of money. I have never really had a lot of cash on hand so to stay in the game I work on other people's cars. I have built or worked on way more hot rods than I could have ever built on my own and been happy to do it.

  7. 72.7% as of my vote are more builder oriented. On this site I guess I'm not surprised. I like driving them too which is why I'm not doing anything this round to finish standard. I could imagine the more I drive the more I want to build. Damned dilemma I tell ya!

  8. If I was “clever-er,” I’d palm some of the process of building off then I’d be driving more and sooner.
I suppose that makes me a builder, love fabricating and problem solving myself,
some days it’s, do I do shed time, or go out on the bike for a blast?

I have always been a builder with around 40 complete and partial builds over the last 52 years. Last year I sold my deuce delivery, 5 window and pu because the thrill was over. I'm currently in the middle of a deuce tudor and another roadster. I have managed to hang on to my deuce 3 window for over 40 years and my Henry deuce roadster for 10.
