The guy that keeps buying projects knowing that you have more projects than lifespan left?

I fall into that category. It’s the pipe dream of owning everything I like that gets me in trouble.

Oh, how I wish I was one of those guys that was brand loyal to only one make/model.

I work with a guy that buys Buicks only. He has a ton of GS Stage Ones etc.

I have a 29 Ford Roadster, a 28 Ford sedan, a 35 Ford pickup, a 36 Ford Pickup, a 1955 Ford Customline, a 1963 Avalair travel trailer and we are going to look at a 65 Suburban this weekend.

My wife is just as bad. She feeds the monster.
I am 54 and I average about 3-4 years per project. The 35 is the only one that is finished. At this rate, I’m not sure I’ll ever get done with them all.

I don’t wanna be that guy that says “ I have plans on fixing it up some day”.

  2. I HAVE MANY FRIENDS LIKE THAT, HAHA. ONE....EVERYTIME HE GOES TO PICK UP SOME PARTS, HE BUYS ANOTHER CAR! IT'S A DISEASE....

I'm trying not to be like that. But it's easy to sit on FB Marketplace and see the project cars and just think about how great it would be all fixed up, completely neglecting the enormous amount of work, time, and money it will take to make the fantasy a reality. We're all guilty of it.

used to be, but I got over it...now I have 3 old cars, and they're all driving.

I figured out that I can get rid of the ones that I'm not motivated to work on.

Same here, 3 old cars, all running. Just tinkering and fixing what breaks is all I have the time an energy for anymore. But if a nice Nomad came along...

And if you spend a little money/time on all them, nothing ever gets done.

In the 70's , I always had 7 at a time. Stayed that way for a while , sell one , buy one , kept at 7.
    Now I have none - 0
I couldn't take care of them if I had any.
I like reading about you guys going through the same process.
Enjoy your youth, gives you something to talk about in old age.

Yup. I'm 41 and I've already had to do the math and figured out I likely already have a lifetime's worth of projects pre-bought.

54........and you are worried about not finishing your projects !

The thing I have found is that you just keep pushing yourself to do things rather than becoming a couch potato, and you will probably live much longer anyway.;)

I was that way, but have become much more realistic in the last year or so. I sold 3 vehicles that were mine so I could better focus on keeping one of mine going as well as trying to keep both my boys old cars going. Oh, but...I did just buy another one a week or so ago. It was too good of a deal to pass up...

Oh, and you know I am ready for the roadster when you are tired of it. :D

Easiest to finish a project, is to start with a car you really, really like. Not something that you found that is sort of cool and was underpriced, so you bought it!

...and having a real use for the car helps, too. If there's an event I want to participate in, and there's a deadline for getting the car done for that, I'll get it done. Otherwise, the motivation just isn't there.

    Oh yeah.
I want one of everything, too.
    Gotta have a roadster.
    And a coupe.
    An early model.
    A later model.
    A hardtop.
    Hot rod.
    Custom.
    Stocker.
    Everybody needs a shop truck.
Can't pick between black red and blue. So... one of each.

    I should clarify.
In reality, what I want and what I get is two different things.
I did have a half dozen cars/projects and a chicken coop full of parts. Things changed. Sold everything. Had little interest or capability for a while. But I came around.
    Now...
1953 Chrysler 2dr ht for a relatively simple and inexpensive project.
    And I couldn't help it...
I'm gathering parts for a roadster project.
Considering I'm a bit older now (65) and time wants to go fast and my body wants to go slow, I think these two projects should probably be enough.
I might even sell the Chrysler so I can focus on the roadster.
Still, I've always thought it would be fitting to have both a
    .........ROD & CUSTOM.........
Having 1 cool old car is pretty neat. But 2 cool old cars sitting next to each other is a scene... a happening... a drag race.
Besides, I need something with a roof for when it's raining and I can't drive the roadster.

Oh boy... here we go again.

At my age I don't want my wife to have to sell a basket case, the Stude and Chevy are done and would be "easier" to sell than the roadster I am working on now. That said I have parts and a body left over from the Studebaker project that need to be sold. I don't peruse the sale sites of old cars (usually) until I am ready for another. I may be an oddity here:)

  20. No, I am not that guy. I stopped buying projects several years ago. The GMC is being worked on again, need to get it to daily driver status. Got the Salt car and a couple A's in storage. Just like with my vintage mountain bikes I am starting to thin out the excess. One of these days I am going to have a good scrap run of all the crap that is not worth saving. Like the 305 block that needs boring

  21. I've heard others on the hamb say at this point I don't buy green banana's, I'm starting to get what they are saying.

I've got one project and I'm starting to gather parts.

I learned a long time ago if you have a number of projects and keep spending money on them you will never get any of them built, pick the car or truck you really want, sell all the others and the money will be there to built that one you can't live without and in record time. HRP

Also once was, but have parted with almost everything. One at a time now, and mostly not cars. Too busy. Maybe when I'm old I'll hoard shit again.

  25. I guess I would be considered "that guy" :D I also fall into the category of "I want one of each!

I currently have 12, some Hamb friendly, some not, some done, some not. However They are all inside, paid for & I don't need to sell them to live comfortably, so for now I will prod along with the idea of building most of them. I am getting rid of 1 that I bought as a parts car, but had 2nd thoughts for a while as it is really clean, but not valuable. I am also contemplating selling my 57 Pontiac that I was going to build a Gasser out of.

The hobby is definitely addictive, but is much healthier than other addictions!

    God Bless

Space has always limited me to a small number of cars. And I've rarely bought another if I still have a current project going on. I'm usually so focused on the current project that I don't even look for another.
I have three cars that are all driving(most the time!) and no plans to get another, as it would mean something I love would have to go away.

  27. No- I think in series.

    I'm building a '28 sedan.
I promised Wifey a mild custom '46-'48 Ford convertible after that.
Then a '28-'29 highboy roadster on deuce rails for me.

After that, I'll be rolling in a wheel chair (with "bigs-n-littles" of course).

  28. Nope. Pretty much the 'one and done' type. Never saw the allure of of having just to have. Figured out very early that having more than one project meant not having the time/money to finish it. Listened to those excuses from others and just bit my tongue. Only time I 'accumulated' parts was during my Sprint racing days and that was because I had a really bad habit of 'consuming' them on a semi-regular basis.

Describes me perfectly. I'm embarrassed to say how many I have. Finally trying to sell some off and no buyers.
