hi guys ,if any of you know me ,you know i had old cars {not street rods in high school} when everybody else had 66-72 chevelles, mustangs gtos !i have been to nsra ,good guys ,btt50s,america cruises , i guess my grip is the exorbant entry fees, and the absense of good giveaway prizes, like 50.00 off a $400.00 purchase ?a chance to win something big if you drive 500 miles to an event in 2 months ?and sitting at an awards ceremony and watching some "gold chain" or idiot picking up his award for best this or that and knowing the guy locally as a air head that had somebody build it for him , and some other idiot sitting nearby complaining that his car is just as nice and he spent near twice as much as some of the trophy winners , but didnt get picked for any awards? also when we go to an out of town show the motel/ hotel prices just about double ! but you dont see any motel chains giving any free stays away ? i gues if this new organization is started /where is the money going going going ???? my two cents worth !!!!! mike "carryallman" wahl norwalk iowa

(((The point is, without new blood, the organization will wither and decline.))))

Somebody will end up with all those cars unless every Street rodder gets buried with his car!!!

What I liked was I could go to a NSRA show and it was all pre-48. I enjoy Camaros and mustangs as well as the next guy! But it was nice just to go to a street rod show!!

My 2 cents. If the NSRA is going to live up to its name, they need to keep it pre49. If they are going to allow a 1980 Chevette in then they need to change their name. Their own website tells what a street rod is. They are not living up to their name. They need to go back to the old way they used to run things. If they want to allow cars over 1949, then bring back the street machine division. I live 20 miles from Louisville. Haven't been in 3 years. Sold my 39 Chevy, sold my 40 Ford coupe, sold my 55 Olds. Don't have a car to drive inside, so I go to the motels at night time to see the cars. I am not going to pay $14.00 to walk myself to death in 85 to 90 degrees. You can talk to more car owners at night when it's cooler, because half of the car owners are inside where it is air conditioned. I am now building a 55 Plymouth,I know I could drive it in this year, but I don't want to. I like most cars pre 66, don't ask me why. Just my 2 cents.

may as well be buried in 'em.........if you do a little homework you'll see what happens to the cars of the generations as they age and pass on. With only a few exceptions, the cars decline in value. It appears that vehicles we favor most are those we grew up with. The generation that follows has their preferences shaped the same way. Yes, there is crossover, but not in the numbers needed to find a good home for all the cars out there. Nothing in this life is forever...........enjoy your car and the moment........it's all we have............the rest is speculation.

I just can't do the ( By-laws) and (Bull-Shit) deal ! The ones that really make me want to puke is the fuckin decal that says (Look, but don't touch) I don't want to wipe your finger prints off of it before I put it in the trailer.

    Very correct.
when the HRT gets finished, if its ever finished, I plan to drive the sh$t out of it and let the estate worry about selling it, junking it or whatever. I won't be around to know the difference.

The more I read about organizations and dues, the more I like cruise nights. First they are usually free, second if I don't like what I see, I can leave, and third I am not held hostage unlike many organized shows where, after having had the privilege of paying the organizer to stroke your ego (kinda like the band paying the promoter to be allowed to play or the team paying the organization for the 'privilege' of playing and all the spectators get in for free) you are then told you are not allowed to leave until after the show has finished - no thanks.

Having to still work for a living, I find it hard to turn loose of my money to join any organization to attend ONE meet a year...I go to GG in Ft Worth, and I plan to go OKC to NSRA deal. Will try to go to Austin too, but that is a reach due to work. I like ALL well built cars, and can appreciate the hard work in most anything.

But I also remember when I had NO place to go to see any cars other than the drags..The big shows were in California, and the World of Wheels was the only "show" we had around here...So maybe we should appreciate what we have, and just don't go if you don't like it.

Like HNSTRAY says its a business and the object of a business is to make money. I get that. But don't lie to its members and say that 98 percent are for it. I, for one, have never talked to any street rodder that says they were for it. But, then maybe, I have only talked to the other two percent. Yeah, right. And yes, I do remember the van division. I took my van to a show in 1976 and was approched by a NSRA member who told me about it and sold me two jacket patches.

  14. I went back a read ALL the responses,it seems a lot of guys don't care for any type of organized associations and that is all well and good,,to each their own.

Also it appears that the majority of guys that like the idea are older guys like myself that remember a time when our style of cars almost disappeared from the landscape,,there were a few hot rodders but there was nothing to bring them together,,

I have always used the events as a vacation,,and as a vacation you will spend money on food and lodging,,simple fact of life,,my wife and I have attended many NSRA events and made many friends we would have never met without being there,,not to mention numerious HAMBERS.

Back in the day The National Hot Rod Association was more for racing,, not driving our hot rods and customs,,you had a few indoor car shows over the winter but most of the activity we read about in HOT ROD MAGAZINE,,

The 1972 Street Rod Nationals in Peoria was like the greatest thing in the world,,and thanks to guys like Tex Smith and others we found out that there were actually more people that liked what we liked.

All this was before the internet,,before Ryan dreamed up the Jalopy Journal and the HAMB,,which BTW grew larger that he ever dreamed much like the NSRA of the past.

To get back on track,,Deuce Dog posted this thread as a alternative for the guys that were unhappy with the route NSRA has taken and it has turned into a why some hate organized events.

As I said in my first post on the subject,,I am a creature of habit,,,just like turning on the computer every morning,,the first thing I do is check out the HAMB.

Do I like the direction the NSRA is heading?,,no,,do I like the idea of another assocition picking up the ball NSRA dropped,,,you bet,,I signed up.

BTW,,I have been fortunate enough to win a super prize at a NSRA event,,a Walker Radiator,,that made up for a lotta entry fees!:D HRP

  15. Well hell if you think it's OK for the NSRA to let in Post '49 cars, then maybe we ought to open the HAMB up to Tuner cars. Same thing, isn't it?...

HOTRODPRIMER, I think you nailed it,

    #1. NSRA is a business
#2. They can do what they want (refer to #1)
#3. If you don't like it, don't go or join

Of course, this is just my opinion

I have been reading this from the start. The wife and I belong to both GG and NSRA, we travel to each of there shows when we can and support them when in our town. When I go to there shows I look at what I like and walk past what I don't like, I talk to who I want and don't talk to who I want, we support some local shows even when we can't go we still enter. I will still go to Louisville in Aug. as that is one we like, like I said if I don't like it I'll just walk on by it. Just my $.02 And no I'm not a gold chainer

Have seen several threads on this site saying that "streetrod" and "ratrods" are dirty words on this site. So what is the purpose of supporting either organization? Both have "streetrod" in the name. Don"t support any and just drive your rides.

Just as they "NSRA" has the right to change their mind, I also have the right to attend or not.

I am not of the opinion that its my way or nothing at all. As several before me have stated, I like many types and years of vehicles, but I do enjoy the option of attending an all pre '49 event.

The NSRA lost me when they didn't abide by their own rules. Right on the event registeration they stated that your vehicle must be of pre-'49 manufacture. Then they allow many, many, many glass rods to enter. Now before I get flamed I also appreciate the glass replicas, just not like I do the real thing. And I think it is not fair to include them both together when the hardware is handed out. No I have no sour grapes as I mostly own A.D Series Chevrolet pickups. Never owned anything earlier than a '47 and have never known anyone that owned anything older than '47.

So in the end it is no big deal, I, you, we have the power. Attend if you like, don't attend if you don't.

Street rods, by-laws, and arguing about the NSRA, it's all just kinda gay.

Entry Fee is $15.00 dollars. That includes a dash plaque, commemarative diecast and a free T-Shirt. It also includes a free meal, a free continental breakfast and free admission to a dance. By the way, all profits go to the Easter Seals and St. Judes and not into private bank accounts. It is run by a small car club (E'ville Iron)with help from friends and family members and is geared toward family fun. It has an excellent swap meet and has a lot of HAMB friendly cars/trucks and yes even Street Rods as well as a few originals. Usually around 4000 vehicles give or take a couple hundred. And no it's not even in the same ball park....only in a good way. Oh yeah, its all pre-49 and no trailors allowed on the grounds.

I too appreciate all kinds of cars and trucks. I know I can choose where and where not to go and look at what I want to look at. What pisses me off about the NSRA thing is that I do not like being lied to. 98% of the membership do not support the change. If that figure is correct you can bet that respondents to any survey were hand picked. I atteneded the 09 Nats in Knoxville and the boos were deafening when they announced the year change. They should have come out and said "Gang, its about the money" they would have gotten a lot less flack in my opinion.I am attending that show again this year for probably the last time. If it turns out like I expect then there will be be a bunch of cars registered that you would be able to see in any back street car lot in Podunk City, America. What NSRA also did was turn their backs on the people that got them to where they are now. You dance with the one you brought. And everyone knows if they had gone 72 and back they would get accused of copying GG........:( waaah!!!

Now that the rant is over. I prefer 64 and back. Thats why I like the HAMB. I am more than proud to belong to this group. I have been to the Meet and Greet twice in Knoxville and was able to meet several members including Denise and her Dad (both great people). I have learned of shows/cruises I never knew existed. Some will take the place of the Nats South from now on.

I'm going to sign up for more info on this ASRA. If I don't like the direction it goes I will simply "opt out".

I'm sure it's been said already in this thread, but since I'm not going to rear 5 pages of it...

The NSRA is unpopular among some because of the crowd of people who attend and their vehicles.

A splinter group of the NSRA doesn't change anything. Same people driving the same skittles, just at a different event.

The Peoria NSRA Street Rod Nationals was in 1970, for the record.

Sadly, times change and markets change and NSRA, as a business, has decided to change too.
