    It has SafeGuard........

That is a speed warning device...you set it at the speed limit and it reminds you when you exceed the speed you set.....

goddamnit. I just want a speedo that doesn't make horrible sounds and actually tells you how fast your going? Is that too much to ask? what do ya think the chances are that I can actually fix my speedo if theres a gear or something in there that's broken?

I know it's the speedomoeter, took out the gear at the******* and checked the cable, put in a new cable, lubed it up good, no dice. It has to be the speedo, Haven't gotten it out yet, but it went from working, to just working some, to not working at all.

I bid what I thought it was worth on 6 of them before I finally scored one on my Chevelle. It's like that with most things on E-Bay. Keep looking, another will come along. What kills me is all the guys with catalogs that offer repro stuff on E-Bay with the reserve set at their catalog price. Amazing how many people will bid an extra 20 bucks for a part on E-Bay instead of ordering it thru the catalog.

Post your wants on the Performance Years board in the 'Big Pontiac Parts Wanted' forum. Just register and post, better than playing on eRape and you'll likely find a better price on a speedo cluster. [IMG]

Another source is Steve Barcak at Pontiac Heaven in Arizona, he has a ton of older Pontiac parts and is super-knowledgeable as well.

I signed up on the one pontiac board earlier, but It won't let me post still. I e-mail the guy at pontiac heaven, so we'll just have to see what happens.

Ok, here's a trick to fix most speedo problems...like horrible screeching noises and bouncing from 10 mph to 50 mph...take it out of the dash. Look somewhere between where the cable screws on and the main housing...where the shaft goes through. You will see a tiny brass plug...use your pocketknife, icepick, dental tools or whatever and pry the little******* out. Behind it will be a felt wick, this is to hold oil for shaft lubrication (starting to sound like a**** how-to now [IMG]!). Spray penetrating oil of your choice down in the hole, over and over...be careful, if it has a sealed glass face you my get too much and it will run out on the inside. Use fingers (or a drill) and spin it over to work the lube in, hold it back side down and let the dirty stuff flush out. Once you are satisfied it is free, wash the felt out in some thinner, alcohol or whatever. Fill the hole with a light oil, like 3-n-1, soak the felt in the oil and reinstall. Replace the little brass plug and you are good for another 30 years or 50,000 miles or so....most GM speedos have this little plug, not sure about other makes.
