Arggh! Destroyed my Studebaker hood!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Flat Ernie, Jul 31, 2007.

  1. had a v-8 vega fiberglass hood launch coming down the 512 hill into puyallup. had hood pins at all 4 corners and thats all that stayed. if it wasn't for the oil spraying from the severed gauge line we would have never know it was gone, kinda BAKED that morning. went back a few days later a there it was in the median good thing i was working at a fiberglass shop at the time couple days later it was good as new with reinforced corners.

when I first got my 54 running, my buddy and I took it around the black a few times without the hood. After the 3rd time, we thought it'd be cool to put the hood on and cruise around the block just to see what it looked like. At the end of the block my buddy tells me to stomp on it and as I'm flying down the street, my hood starts to wobble a little and for a split second it lifted up and just hung there before flying completely over my car and landing in the street. Luckily it only got a few dents but it wasn't worth the scare.

Sorry to hear that happened to you, but like everyone has said it could have been worse. I'm sure you'll find a hood in no time!

They're out there - there's one on eBay I'm watching - over near Dallas area. Got a couple offers over on the SDC site & a few from here, so trying to get everything sorted out...

  5. The situation of the hood with rearranged back corners, happened to me while test driving a '69 Gallaxie XL from a used car lot. The sales guy did not latch the hood after giving the battery a boost jump. For years now, I have been passing on this piece of hard knock knowledge about double checking the hood for latchness. Things like this build character and make good stories later in life. Hope you find a hood for a fair price and close to where you live. Let the healing begin - right here at the H.A.M.B..

Damn, I can't tell you how many times I didn't fully latch my hood. in different vehicles. My saftey catches have always saved me so I could pull over and slam it shut. Knock on wood eh.

Well, MilesM saved my bacon & drug a hood from Phoneix to me on his way to the drags. See my "MilesM is a Rockstar" post here:

I couldn't resist just setting it on there - looks like it only needs very minimal work. Got other projects on the front burner right now, but this is probably next - need to bolt it on, do any adjusting it needs, then get it painted to match.

    Thanks again, Miles!

-Glad you found a hood! :) My cousin finished bolting a new engine in his Jeep mudrunner, fired it up and jumped in for a blast down the farm road in front of his house. In his eagerness, he also failed to latch the hood. The hood flew up, took out the windshield, and he ended-up rolling the Jeep five-times in the ditch. Thank goodness for roll cages, and competition harnesses... Good to hear you came out unscathed.

I had the same thing happen years back, and to think that I laughed at my late Dad when he showed me his anti-hood fly-up mechanism. Man, I miss him and his wisdom. There is one on my shoebox now. Best 5 bucks I ever spent.

Did that to a 67 442 hood (louvered) when i was in HS. Made me sick.
I was able to buy a brand new one from the Olds dealer. I still have the invoice for it. With Dad's discount it was just under a hundred bux.
Guess a new from the dealer is out for you huh?

This happened to me last night in my '50 Ford. I've owned the car for nine years, worked on it pretty steadily for the last two and got it so that it is a driver about three weeks ago. I was going to an end of the season cruise about 15 miles away. Got out of work late, and took the highway instead of back roads to try and make up a little time. I saw the hood lift a little, got the car over and re-closed it. Jumped on it to get up to traffic speed (5:45,Rt 91, outside Hartford CT), got up to about 60 and BAM! the hood was against the windshield:eek: . I got onto the shoulder guessing where I was from the lines out my door window. I used my trusty Leatherman to get the hood off (Remembered later there were tools in the trunk), shoved it inside the car and went to the cruise.
The part that doesn't help is that I saw this thread about two weeks ago, and picked up some stuff to make a safety latch. I just haven't had time to to get it done.

So... FWIW, maybe someone else can benefit from my experience and if they need to connect some extra security, do it before there is a problem. I got off relatively lucky considering what happened, where and when.
