If you look in the SFI 25.4 blueprints, Fig. B, it shows the cage being built like this. It allows at the inside for the inner funny car cage bar to extend over the driveshaft tunnel and give the driver more room. I assure you, every cage I build passes tech, and I would NEVER endanger a driver by not following SFI specs to the letter.

The car is a complete tube chassis. In that, a funny car style cage is necessary for the car to pass tech at the track. Also, by the hardly ever exact math, the car should run mid 9's at the track. Thanks for asking though. Don't you just hate non-functional stuff in/on a car?

Thanks for the words guys. I'm really pumped about this build, and I'm hoping the owner comes in tomorrow and makes a decision.

  14. Looks bitchin. So you are doing a funny car halo because it's required for a tube chassis build or because the customer wants it? Reason I'm asking is I've got dibs on a tube chassis setup based on a '50 Merc. I thought the cage for say a 9.50 car would just need to be a 10 point with a window net.

Hey how many hours would you say you will have in the chassis and cage?

John, it has the halo because that is what is required to pass tech for the times he plans to run at the drag strip.

Outstanding!!! You are a master craftsman!!!

  18. Funny car halo is needed for times faster than 8.50, I don't think a pump gas BB will run that build that fast. I had an OT car that had a 25.5 cert which was good for 8.50 and slower, and it was a 10 pt, window net, parachute (150mph and faster), and some other stuff. Just asking.

It's a pro-mod. In reality. Your opinion, although valued, is outweighed by the NHRA Head Tech for Div. III, Rich Bowers, down at Div.III Headquarters in Indy. And the math says that the car should go mid to low 9's at 144 mph. Pump gas has nothing to do with it. Weight vs. hp and torque have everything to do with estimated times. And track conditions, weather and driver have everything to do with what it will really run. Also, the owner has talked about adding a supercharger at some point. Rather than build a car that won't pass tech after he does that and potentially breaks the 150mph restriction on the cage, it's better to do it in the initial build. I'm not trying to impress anyone with the style of cage. Rather, adhere to NHRA/SFI standards.

You are correct in thinking that the funny car portion is necessary after the 150mph barrier. In a FULL BODIED car. When building a full tube chassis, the car is no longer FULL BODIED by definition. No rocker panels, no unibody frame or frame period. Essentially the cage IS the frame. When this is the plan, SFI mandates the 25.4 cage design for the drivers compartment. I don't think Rich Bowers would steer anyone wrong, that's not his job.

Oh, and by the way, if you're ever at a local track around here, and still think of the pump gas as never going into the 8's, there is an ORANGE pro-mod 70 or so Dart running around. It runs a 273 with a 6:71 blower and an automatic. I think it weighs around 2300 lbs. Runs on pump gas, and they have been known to dip into the 7's on the right day. I've seen the time slips and watched it run.

That car would not qualify as a full bodied car any more, IMHO. Once the floor and frame are replaced with round tubing it becomes more of a pro-mod. I see some missing tubes in that car, but nothing that couldn't be added. One problem you may have though is the NHRA is cracking down on mixed metal cars (steel and chromoly tubing both used in the same car.) The body looks nice enough though. Perhaps a good place to start???

No, I wasn't taking your question wrong. Just wondering where you were going, as I had answered the same question previously in the thread. No worries. Stop by some time for a beer or coffee and we'll talk about your project. I have several cars in the shop that are similar, and we can discuss options. For the speed you intend to run, say slower than 8.50, you may want to go the route we're taking Emotional Abuse.

  23. Yeah I like what you are doing with Emotional Abuse. I'll try to stop by soon to get take a look at the builds, they look great.
