I have read a few posts on here concerning junk yards containing older stuff. I realize that many have been crushed, but I am hoping to find a few yards in southwest Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma that still have some old iron. The yard in Cabool, MO is awesome and am hoping to find more like that. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
What part of Arkansas? What kind of stuff are you looking for? If you have an idea of where you might be and what you're looking for, I might be able to steer you in the right direction In the last 6-7 years, a whole lot of yards with the old stuff have been crushed, due mainly to scrap prices. But there are still a few around. I'd be happy to give you whatever help I can.
Each year, we take off to a state within a days drive of Illinois and start searching for junkyards. We will be hitting the yard in Cabool, MO (SE of Springfield) and then will head south from there, so any part of Arkansas will work. In particular, we are working on the following (4 of us): 1958 Pontiac Starchief, 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1966 Pontiac Lemans, 1970 Pontiac GTO, 1974 Pontiac Trans Am, 1969 Camaro's, and several Buicks ranging from 1952 to 1973. We enjoy looking at any car, GM or not and do it for mainly fun. Thanks for the fast reply!
Not sure if this helps... Back in the 70's when I was little, there was an old junk yard with early cars 20's and 30's (judging from the shape and style) on the south side of Rector, in North East AR on Hwy 1 now Hwy 49. I have no idea what happened to it or if it is still there.
Thanks fauj! I took a look at google maps and do see what appears to be a crushed out junk yard just SW of Marmaduke on HWY 49. Crushers........
I found this thread and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the yards mentioned? Old Wolf mentions three yards within 20 miles of each other. They do appear on Google maps. Does anyone know if these contain old steel? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292431&highlight=arkansas+junk+yard
There were several just north of Paragould and South of Marmaduke. Two of them side by side on the east side of the highway, from what I remember, they were mostly newer stuff. I guess I mean by that mostly 70's or newer.
There was a junkyard about 30 miles east of KC on I70. Bills auto salvage? can't remember the exact name. They had a bunch of old iron but on my recent trip to St. Louis there was a mobile crusher there. Looks like just started not sure what's left.
This MAY save you time and gas on wild goose chases. Beats letting your fingers do the walking, as in the old days. I try to research first, as there's nothing worse than driving all day and finding zip, right? As of the end of December '09, HAMBer RoadkillCustoms of Louisville (RoadkillCustoms.com) had further updated and improved his BIG national list of junkyards and salvage yards, covering some 5,000 yards! Not only have guys helped him ADD lots of yards, but he added new search features, as well. The latest link he's posted is: View Junk Yards, Salvage Yards and Auto Recyclers Database. Just key that in to the Search block on Page 1 of the HAMB homepage. He originally posted in July '08 about his project. You can look further into details by searching his thread: "Junk Yards, Salvage Yards and Auto Recyclers" on the HAMB'net, folks! Who knows, the time spent reading his thread & following some leads could help you find your next project! Thanks again, RoadKill for the "public service," and THANKS to the HAMB for being the best board for traditional rodders and customizers!!!

Very nice jimi'shemi291. I saw that database at one time and lost it. They even have a database for your internet capable phone! The place mentioned in your last post looks really neat and would not be far from our original destination of Cabool, MO. Thanks and I will save that database to my favorites this time!
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292431&highlight=arkansas+junk+yard I've seen the yard @ Possum Grape that is mentioned on here. It looks great from the road, but some folks say the cars are pretty much stripped already. My Dad worked for some people from Illinois who came down here and opened a brake shoe plant. The plant has shut down, but the owners have a bunch of old stuff in the former plant. They love old Caddies,Buicks, and Pontiacs. My Dad and I went in there a few months ago,but I can't remember what all they had in and around the building. It's right near my parent's house in the big town of Gum Springs,Arkansas. I don't know If I would drive all the way down here just to see their stuff, but you might stop if you're ever in the area.
Inness on hwy 90 about three miles from me has about 3000. lotsof older vehicles PH 892-9898 Joey Rhone hwy 63 between Ravenden and Imboden also has some older vehicles Rhone Auto Salvage 869-2520. Ernies on hwy 62 east of Imboden 869-2095 Oldwolf
Don't mention it. Just HAMBers trying to help other HAMBers find the remaining good stuff! With old yards getting cleared every year, it won't last forever.
Not junkyards, but I know where a few are stashed. I miss the old car mag we used to have in nwa that was full of old cars, but it went out of business 3-4 years back. The road between monett and springfield MO is pretty fertile hunting grounds. Joplin craigslist is about the best one in the area for old car stuff. One guy has 3 60-64 cars up as of a couple days ago. I don't really know of any great yards full of old iron, but I know places where a handful are.
there used to be some out in the woods in the middle of Maulmelle. I haven't been back in a while. Dont know if its still there.
Years back there was a yard North of Little Rock, right off I-40; closest town was Maumelle Completely surrounded by fairly high-end subdivisions, and overgrown. You could see a few of the cars, only in the winter, from the interstate. The owner was stand-offish, but the guy I went with knew him, and he let us look around. He had a Pontiac section with about 2 dozen 50-60's Ponchos. Not much to go on, but maybe someone from that area can chime in. (See above post from Invicta)
That is Sonny's place in Maumelle. Yea, he is a bit "stand-off-ish", but will respect you as much as you respect him. Obviously, I have not been there in a couple of years (since I've been here!!), but heard that they have not run him off yet. Some of the other Conway HAMBers would know more about his current status. ALOT of parts about in piles and stuffed in vans, etc., few 50's cars, more 60 and 70's.. Really nothing older than that.
Duke182 and myself have bought a few pieces from the guys at the brake parts plant. They had quite a stash of stuff last time we were by there, several convertibles and some sought after muscle cars. 46-48 chevies on later model G-body chassis' seemed to be popular with them. The younger guy, I think his name was Bill maybe, was pretty cool once you got to talking with him. He hooked us up with some "junk" parts they had laying outside. Duke and I joked all the way home that they gave off a vibe like they were in the witness protection program or something....kinda like the janitor on Joe Dirt. Theres a 59 Caddy in Gum Springs I have been asking about for years....bet you know right where its at. There are a few smaller yards around here.....Andy Siegel in Texarkana has a couple hundred cars, all 40s, 50s, and 60s. Smith and sons salvage in Waldo, these guys like muscle cars but always have a few older cars laying around. Eddie Doss near Magnolia, ford guy, maybe 50-60 cars, has a brother who had a stash of chevies but Ive never seen them. Donald Terry in Hot Springs, about a hundred cars last time I was there. Great guy, into chevies, serveral tri year parts cars and some pontiacs. Alvin Arnold up in Paragould is a Cadillac and Olsmobile guy. Real nice guy to deal with, Ive made a few trips up there for parts. 300 or so cars probably, hard to find stuff. Theres a place up near Russelville that has a bunch of stuff but I havent been there since they moved closer to civilization. I cant remember the old guys name. Danny Buck in Hollywood, AR has a few stashed in the woods, they dont come any nicer or easier to deal with than Danny.
Hubnut! Its good to see you are back on the internet. Have you got that little boy a hammer and some nails yet? I have found lots of old cars in Ark. Some of them are at the end of private driveways 5 miles long and its best to have a local with you.
John's Auto Salvage (Johnny Morris) outside Judsonia Ark. used to have some older stuff if it hasnt been crushed. There is still some stuff at Possom Grape, but I am sure it is pretty picked over. I am told the owner died a while back and the son is apparently selling stuff out. Rick Barronco at the old Hwy 104 salvage between Pine Bluff and LR has some older stuff--he is not open anymore, but still has a yard full. High scrap prices has just about wiped out all the old yards around central Ark. We are on a major state highway coming out of the hills into Little Rock, and when scrap first got high there was a steady stream of stuff every day coming to the crusher in NLR. A buddy of mine had an older RX7 on Craigs list for $250 and couldnt sell it---he took it to the crusher and got $350. Cant say as I blame folks, but it sure has killed a lot of parts.
That boy could tear up a steel beam with a rubber mallet! Funny you mention the 5mi driveways.....a few months ago I was up in Gurdon,AR when I suddenly remembered that a buddy of mine had pointed out a road to me last time we were through there and said "bunch of cars down there out in the woods". What he left out of that statement was that the road was a dead end at the "compound" where the cars were stashed! There I am cruising up this gravel road, 2 or 3mi, and I see a few cars in the woods along the road, next thing I knew the road just stopped. There was 3 trailer houses in semi-circle, couple of 4x4 trucks, a motorcycle, a confederate flag, several large dogs, and a strange sulfer-ish smell in the air......there were also several 50s model cars scattered around out behind the place in the woods! lol.....I didnt stick around. That probably would've turned out alot worse than my "trespassing adventure" from a couple years back.....which btw I WILL be returning to in the next couple of months with an escort so watch for pics!
There is a yard in West Plains called either John Conners salvage or just Conners salvage,He used to have a bunch of old iron there in the back.Beware he is a VERY strange bird and is just as likely to tell you to leave as tell you where to look!If you want something he has he may ask you to price it,if he does make him an offer. If you dont or tell him to price it he will tell you to leave! There is also an old yard around Mammoth Springs Ark. but i cannot remember the name,Might ask some locals about it.I think it's off Ark.hwy.289 There is an awsome OLD yard in a lttle town called Wirth Ark. south of Mammoth Springs,The name is Bigg's salvage. The son owns a yard about a mile from his dad's yard. The old mans yard has the old stuff. It is near the junction of E.Wirth rd. and County rd.90 You get down that way i might be able to get away long enough to run down there with you if you would want the company
Wow! I appreciate all of the help you guys are giving me. Ark. sounds like a great place to go to look for parts and vehicles. We just do not have the yards here in Illinois any longer. I know of a few in Indiana and a couple of great ones in Missouri, but Arkansas sounds like a gold mine. Sounds like we will have a great trip and may have to hit a couple in Kansas/Oklahoma while we are out and about. Thanks again!
How about Leroy Hornes just west of Springdale Ar? Its been a long time since I was last there but he used to have a lot of old iron.
A friend and I went to Dallas just before Christmas to pick up a 56 Ford Wagon he bought. On the way back we looked for yards along Highway 75 in eastern Okla. We ran into a good one about 10 miles south of Muskogee. I was specifically looking for some narrow 8" rearends and he had a number of them. Only problem, it was Saturday and he closes at noon and we got there at 11:30. You have to take everything off yourself and he won't move cars for you, although everything is side by side---not stacked. We didn't have a jack or jack stands so we were out of luck, but the prices were right. $60 for a 56" wide 8" rear. The yard is just a couple of miles east of 75. Don't have the name, but we were sent there by a local auto parts store.
Big Bubba....Found the yard (or two) you were talking about on Google. Looks like another great one. All of you guys have been a tremendous help. We won't have to stop at parts stores/body shops on the way during this trip (as Fat47 mentioned doing). It is fun stopping and asking, but many turn into dead ends. At least from home, you can locate it on a map/satellite photograph before you leave. Thanks again to all of you for the help. This has to be the best web site I have ever found!
Ah Danny Buck aka "Old Buddy!" That yard is awesome. You never know what kind of car, animal,or person will be lurking in that yard. We've heard the EPA is really after Danny so maybe he can hang on for a while. He also got robbed and shot at here recently, but the gun jammed! He and his wife have also had health problems. Yup, the brake shoe guys are Bill,Chuck, and Andy. I have known them for years, and my Dad worked for them for 10 years or more at least. They even gave me a scholarship to Henderson State. Great guys! They do have that vibe at first, but they're fine after you get to know them. Is the '59 on HWY 26 going back to I-30?? I think I remember the car. Mr. Warren Hunter has a bunch of stuff out in the woods on the right side of the road going back to the interstate, but I don't know if any of it could be bought. I have the wrecked yellow '66 Deuce in Gum Spings if you have seen it. You can see it from 67,but you have to be looking in the right place. It's rotting down at my parent's.
