As a hot-rodder would it really bother you if "they" brought back the double nickel?

55 is the current highway speed limit in the NYC "metro" area... Some highways are 45 and even the FDR drive is 40 (I think, don't quote me on that).

What I'm waiting for is the day, with all of the GPS and computer car stuff, when you get a speeding ticket in the mail cause your car sent in the data that you were on a highway with a 55 limit and you went 56...

I don't feel one bit sorry for anyone who chooses to live 25 miles or even further from town or their jobs. Around here at least that means you are usually paying less in property taxes so it sorta' washes out when you add in the newer high cost of fuel. [/quote]

Well with that attitude how would you feel about a hog or cattle feeder operation next door to you? Not everyone wants to live stacked on top of each other. Your the kind of person people in the country don't want moving in as a neighbor because they bitch right away about not having the amenities of town living, or maybe the farmers tractor running early in the morning or late at night, the farmer raising dust from plowing, etc. How do I know this? I was a farmer having to put up with that type of BS. So stay in town and ride you bicycle or walk to work.

good way to save fuel too. 55

  5. hardly at all...

I think the speed limit is jus' fine the way it is now in "most" places.

As for the living 25 miles or more away... we all make personal choices. How many people do you know that choose to live a great distance from where they work and then bitch and complain about the price of driving to work every day? I know quite a few. I live in a city of about 35,000 people and "outside of town" is about 3 miles from my door... lot'sa woods and lot'sa farms. I chose to conserve fuel and time during my workweek by living in town so I had more time and money to get the hell out of town on the weekends... far away from everything I hate about cities and people. If you flip back a page or so you'll see the reason I asked this in the first place.

I like farmers... except the smelly one's :D

I don't have any trouble putting along at 55, as long as the speed limit is 50........... I'm one of those 5 to 7 over guys unless I'm running in a pack of cars then I run with them up to a point. 55 on the interstate? Oh HELL NO!!!!

Wouldn't bother me none. 55 is the state limit in NY already. On top of that, I've got no OD yet, so 60 is my preferred highway speed.

Actually, I don't go very fast in any of the street rods. When I have to go somewhere in a hurry, I have a lovely Nissan Titan that gets really bad mileage, and even worse at 100+ mph (Nevada IS a lovely place to get from A to B rapidly). 55mph would be bearable if I lived in a more populated state, or was only going down to the drugstore for my life-extending medications once a week. There's just something about going fast that is no only exhilirating, but most drivers feel like they're "honing" their skills. Any blue-hair can do 55, it takes a real MAN (and certain ladies) to enter "Thunder Road".

55 would be no problem to cruise at. The sweet spot for mine is 70 though.

Wouldn't bother me a bit. When I was in college I'd drive between N. Indiana and Indianapolis twice a week. It was three hours non-stop down US31 with no A/C and no cruise control at 60mph. Didn't have a radio for the first four months either. I like driving, no matter the speed, no matter the conditions, no matter the time.

I can't believe what I'm reading. I drive my '49 Ford coupe with an original flat 6 that's never been apart at 65-70 (yeah, she's complaining) Our speed limit is 60. I rarely do less than 75 in my daily and it feels slow. Driving long distances at 55 in my opinion may save some gas, but not lives. The chances of driving long distances at 55 and falling asleep are pretty high.

Most cars today can cruise safely at 80 all day long. That's why I love driving in Germany when I'm there on business. Traffic moves at 90-100, traffic permitting. They are better drivers and have fewer accidents. You dont' have time for a coffee, makeup, Blackberries or shaving at 100-120.

Lowering the speed limit to 55 just rakes in more in fines. At least up here where I am, you're a road hazzard on a 400 series highway at 65. You'll have trucks with backhoes passing you.

Leave the speed limit like it is, I can still cruize at 50-55 when I want to.....like taking the old back roads to a rod run in another state and enjoying the scenery as I go. On the way home I can drive 70 on the interstate to get home a little faster.

I like 'propwash's theory, but I thought we were talking 'hot rod'? I love chasin' those lines in my 32 roadster at 75 but, ya gotta keep the posted limit in town & especially school zones! I remember traveling across Texas one time, I ran an even 100 for 5 minutes------------NOW that was some fun!!!!

    Same here...

None of the " Gas Price-Steel Dissapearing-We're all gonna Die" scenarios frighten me as much as some of the ramblings on this Thread.

The 55 speed limit made criminals out of everyone and made them have a fuck it attitude toward "laws".
I endured the 55 speed limit era and as a result have NO respect for ANY laws anymore and only obey any of them to the extent of and with a don't get caught attitude, and that's sad.

Any of you think it wouldn't be a total and maybe tragically a snooze driving from Lincoln to Sacramento on the I-80 at 55mph?
I've done it, or at least tried to do it at 55.
Got stopped by a trooper with a radar for doing 62mph... :(
How do you tell the difference between 55 and 62 on a 140 mph speedometer? and keep it there for fucking DAYS!!!!

I still have a framed "Can't drive 55" poster in the garage. It's apic of a blown Hemi powered Yellow Model A Roadster pulled over by a Black & White Lamborgini CHP car with "Officerinhotpants" writing the ticket.

    Fuck 55!

  21. So Doc,
Can we agree that this one ranks right up there with the are you going to build a Fuel efficient hot rod post?

I mean hell lets be honest, I drive everyday and normally drive somewhere in the neighborhood of 70-80. I have no plans on lugging my mill around. I guess if we go back to 55 I'll have to buy a lower gear.
