years ago, wife and I on vacation..Driving west on I-40 between Williams and Kingman, where there is nothing but miles and miles of miles and miles..Had a flat on rear of her Cadillic, dont remember what year it was,but the spare was one of those damn little ones all shrunk up that needed the cartridge of air that came with the car. I got the spare and cartridge out, tried the cartridge NO AIR,,,What the shit?
This was all in the days before cell phones, but her Cad had a factory CB in it,,I got on the CB and within minutes had an 18 wheeler pull in behind us and unreeled an air hose from his on board compressor,,,
We were on our way ,but I stopped in Kingman, bought a new tire and a cartridge for future..

I've repaired plenty of them with Slime brand sealant inside. Scrape it away so it won't run into the area, rub with tire buffing liquid, grind, glue and install the patch plug.

The more difficult ones were the factory self sealing tires.

Hmmmm....interesting....maybe it was the ''buffing liquid'' we had used that was questionable....it wasn't the glue, because the glue worked fine on every other tire I repaired without the inflatable foam inside....thanks;)

Driving my hobby cars to shows, been pretty lucky, a few problems, but fixed and got there/back, (carry a few tools) last summer was the first flatbed ride home (our restored stock 51 Buick Roadmaster) for any of my Hot Rods or Hobby cars, more flatbed rides than I care to mention for late model SUVs/Trucks/Cars. Like many, I have my cell phone, IMO, best tool you can carry, have had one since 89/90 or so, (remember bag phones). I have posted several towing stories, between my parents towing racers, my self another 20 years plus of towing all over = 40+ years, many many miles, LOTS of adventures and no cell phones back then, Will say, met many great people on road that helped us/me out, never a bad experience, always great people wanting to help out and get you back on road.

  6. Yeah, me too! I considered building a trailer for the T Bucket and running an extra set of matching rear tires on it (not going to fit a 31x18.5x15 Mickey Thompson in a T!), but thought it would look too goofy! May just by one spare and throw it on a trailer if I ever start taking long distance trips in it, but for now, AAA it is!

  7. For the coupe, I have a can of fix a flat, one of those small aluminum racing jacks (only floor jack I've found that will get under it, and it isn't that low!), and a 4 way are all tucked into the recess between the trunk floor and the back of the rear seat. I only throw a spare in for long distance trips, learned that lesson the hard way! A couple of years ago, up at the Big Bear Fun Run, I pulled into our cabin's parking spot to load the up car, and a twig laying on the ground punched a small hole in the sidewall! It was a pretty small leak that would stop when it was on the ground side of it's rotation, so I aired it up and hauled butt for the nearest (and only) tire store. Thankfully this happened on Monday morning after the show, so everything was open. Unfortunately, they didn't have a tire to fit it, but the called a service station (yes, they still have one there!) that had a small tire selection and had two different style tires that would fit. One had a very aggressive tread pattern that would have looked stupid on a '48 Plymouth, and the others were Pirelli's! I now have 2 VERY expensive front tires on it (can't have miss matching front tires!). Kept the other old front tire for a spare.

I don't?can't carry a spare tire. I do carry a can of that spray in stuff. I don't worry much though because when in trouble with a Hot Rod it isn't long when somebody stops to help you. I won't boor you with all the times I was in need of help and it came but once I broke a valve stem in a front too in Lovelock Nevada sometime after 4:pm. I asked around about a tire store and was told right across the interstate underpass. I got there just before five and the manager dug around until he found two tubes. One too big and one too small. I picked the small one because I didn't want any folds. they put it on and wouldn't take any money. By the time I left it was a half hour after their closing time and everybody was smiles and waves as we left. Not sure if they liked my roadster or were glad to be getting off work. I suspect the former.

I always carry a spare and basic tools' including a fire extinguisher. Cell phones dont always work, and no one will stop to help, even when your truck is on fire.

  10. I carry a couple of spares. Jack lug wrench tools jumper cables ect. I hate cell phones haven't owned one since I quit driving truck. I like to be self reliant. When I drove truck I didn't have a spare. But carried enough tools that I could single out a dual axle or pull a dual off and install it on the front. I have simply removed the tire from a outside dual and left the rim in place.

Do you travel with one in your 30 coupe?,your other cars listed have a trunk so I can see merit in carting a spare.h room for a spare

In my sedan with me and my wife packed for a week on the road there is not enough room for a spare, but the AAA card fit's nicely in my wallet. HRP

No spare. A few years ago, coming back from Paducah, Ky., I blew the right front tire on the 37 Ford. Local guy stopped and took me to Sam's Club in Marion, Il to buy a replacement. He was/is my guardian angel. Still phone him and chat now and then.

Yep. a donut spare from a Lincoln Towncar that had 16" tires, so the diameter is bigger than a 15" donut. I also carry a cheap harbor freight floor jack and a 4 way. I need to remember to put sone wood blocks to get it up high enough....and as mentioned, check the air in the spare!!
The donuts are great for rolling stock after you do a disc brake swap and aren't ready for the real stuff yet.

I have a positrac 8" Ford rear. My tire sizes are 31x12.5x15 and 195-75x15. Would it affect my rearend to run a different rear tire for any distance until I could repair my flat ?

Hey, Fresno. You just need a more popular hotrod. LOL

  21. Would depend on how far you ran it, but the short answer is yes. The different roll out's of the two tires would result in constant slippage in the clutches, causing heat buildup. Eventually, this will lead to damage.

NO! It's a Hot Rod! I do have a jack in the roadster, not sure if it works. I did not carry one when I was a kid and did not have AAA. At least I have AAA now.
