Dammit.... you're right. The 6-wheelers are Amphicats, whilst Amphicars are a very different animal. The Amphicars are closer to The Simpsons Aquacars:

  3. That was such a great show. The episode where they took off Scoot McNairy's character still gives me chills. I've never seen anything like it before or since.

    Hello,

With the annual Academy Awards coming up in March and most folks not going to the big theaters due to the pandemic protocols, one of the best movies is now available on streaming channels. We are all aware of the history of Elvis Presley and the recent tragedy in his family history. We grew up watching the whole progress from Tennessee days to the big time Las Vegas stardom. This movie showcased a different look to the whole show from the early beginnings.
    upload_2023-2-18_7-49-34.png
One of the early shots is of a ford roadster zipping through a entertainment center. It is supposedly driven by the character named Jimmie Rodgers Snow. There are other cool old cars from the 50s into the 60s as the lives evolve.
    upload_2023-2-18_8-34-38.png
My wife was one of those young girls that “swooned” over the music and presentation of various concerts and photos of the young Elvis as he rose to fame. My mom even liked his show on the old Ed Sullivan TV presentation, so it also hit others, not just young impressionable girls. My brother and I… not so much, as we stayed in the other room while our mom and dad were watching the TV show.

But, there is no doubt about it, it was a whirlwind that hit all of us in one way or another. When the later stages of his life was going on after the tragic 1968 time period, my wife and I plus others were already locked into the fabulous rock music from the top groups of the era. We did not listen to Elvis songs since the early 45’s that my wife bought at the pre-teen stage.

But, as far as the awards for best movie are there, this is one of the best that showcased a lot of history from those early times to the downfall. The other movie we like to win is the new Top Gun. YRMV

    Hello,

My wife and I just finished our latest viewing of a movie prior to the academy awards show. It was called The Fablemans. The time period allowed us to go back in our own history and remember those fun times growing up in So Cal. But, this movie was done quite well from the styling of Stephen Spielberg.

There was a good storyline about a young kid getting involved in early point and shoot films. It is supposed to be a loose variation of the young life of his own background. The cars of the family were classic for the times and similar to most young families at the time.

    upload_2023-2-21_6-37-52.png
    even a first sighting of a Henry J as a family car…

For me, it was the sight of a point and shoot movie camera action that was the most fun to watch. Also, the hand crank, film editing, table top viewer where I spent countless hours cutting and pasting my dad’s home movies, before I went on to my own drag racing movies. I got free used of his 16mm color movie camera.

When the actor was using the editing machine, it was old home week and remembering those long hours on the dining room table with glue, scissors, dinky film strips. Old style frame by frame display that is now digital and easily done frame by frame.

    upload_2023-2-21_6-39-21.png
But, I had to do his editing as a means of payback for allowing me to shoot films and get the little rolls of film initially bought and developed. Sometimes the film in the camera was my dad’s movies that he took with his own friends and family outings. Those had to be cut and pasted onto another reel of “home movies” for his use. I tried to use my green army men many times to shoot a “war” movie, but it always looked like little green men in a grassy field and foxholes.
    upload_2023-2-21_6-40-26.png
The film was fascinating and all of the filming and work getting the final film ready to show was a step back in my own memory. It was fun and a new way to look at our activities. Plus, who knew it would be of some value to a lot of people from those times and also, new folks…

The one thing my wife and both agree on was a chance encounter during our last years of college in Long Beach. She and a roommate moved into a small beachside 2 bedroom house. It was steps to the ocean side water and white sandy beach. Across the street was the calm Alamitos Bay. It was typical college furnished place.

An old couch that I painted black, colorful chest of drawers and stained glass window stickers instead of curtains. Also, a nice small stereo and a dinky TV. The place was so small that instead of a full bathroom repair and replacement, the owner installed a metal single stall shower instead of a full tile shower. It always sounded like a rainstorm whenever anyone took a shower.

My wife’s roommate was into art and knew a lot of people in the college campus, just a few miles away. We were sitting around enjoying some quiet time. In comes a troupe of people led by her roommate, another girl and two shaggy haired guys from the film school at the college. She met them and ran around with them on campus and off.

We were always together and did not tramp around with her roommate’s activities. But, the odd thing was, that she introduced one of the shaggy haired guys as “Steven” from the film school. It was not just a one time meeting, but the next week, the same group came back to the small apartment for a gathering of sorts. So, we liked our privacy and took off for a bite to eat at a nearby diner. The small house was full with three people, let alone 6 or more.

Finally, her roommate answered our questions about the other couple and she mentioned that the guy was a film student and pretty good one at that. She said his name was Steven Spielberg. Who? They just looked like all of the other grubby clothes, long haired, scruffy face college kids we saw in our time there. So, we just let it go and within a few months, her roommate moved out to another place.

Years later, we found out that a director in Hollywood was a film student at our college in Long Beach. But, he was so wrapped up in his Hollywood activities, he left the college without any notions. The roommate was gone and now all we had was a chance encounter of a 20 something scruffy college kid we met in a small Belmont Shore Peninsula house.

What became of the small house? It is still in the same corner spot on the Belmont Shore Peninsula. I was going to move in with my wife (girlfriend at the time) and that was going to be “our” place. But, the rent was due and we had moved on to the next logical step… we were getting married, so that satisfied my moving in with her for my mom’s worrisome ideals. YRMV

    1965 Dodge touring van

    Hello,

We just watched one entertaining streaming limited series about the rock music scene in the 60s-70s. It is/was called "Daisy Jones and The Six." Based on a book of the same name and for a lot of people, a copy or many similarities of the Fleetwood Mac story. According to the author, it is a story based on rock music scenes from a variety of sources. Not just one group, although many things kept popping into our minds as we saw the concert scenes.

The actors were very similar in dress and style. Riley Keough (Elvis Presley’s granddaughter) looked and performed like Stevie Nicks. Similarities were there, but the author of the book said it is fiction and not related to the famous real life group Fleetwood Mac.
    upload_2023-7-14_4-11-1.png
It is/was a time period series and the early scenes. An old hot rod eye caught all of the cool 50s -60s cars from Ford, Plymouth, Dodge van, a Buick Riviera and even a funky 62 Corvair, like the one my wife used to drive to work and to college. Even with a 1962 Corvair, before we were married, she was asked to be in a college rock band as a backup singer and tambourine specialist. Ha! That would have been something!!!
    upload_2023-7-14_4-11-48.png
The early scenes of the Dodge touring van were how a lot of small groups went from location to location. It was not all giant touring buses until the big time came, if it ever did. A lot of small 3-5 people bands used their own trunks and back seats to transport their equipment. In our teenage days, the trunk of the 1958 Impala was used for one giant amp and the back seat had boxes of cords and connecting wires. But, each person drove his car and it was loaded to the hilt.

This streaming limited series was one of the best shows on recent TV and the music was outstanding. The history of the filming and performers has been in plenty of magazines and articles about the show. The actual filming was during the pandemic and modifications to the practices and films were evident.

No, I was not in a band, but I was in the group that set the amps, speakers and wires up for an impromptu show in a couple of places for parties. The music was always good, but did not last long into the evening. Perhaps an hour or so, until the party was visited by the local police for loud noise disturbances. I knew the songs and could do the chord backgrounds, so, technically, I was more of a "technical guy" and back up rhythm guitar person, if there was a need. YRMV

Anyone have any information about this '56? It was in a movie "Drag Strip Riot" in 1958. There was a club of cool Vettes in the movie, which isn't a half bad movie!

There was a weekly show filmed in Vegas, a detective show I believe, where the main character's sidekick drove a 1956(?) Thunderbird and always parked it inside his apartment. Anyone remember it, or am I dreaming again..o_O

In one of the Annette movies ( Monkey's uncle, Shaggy Dog ?) the boyfriend disobeys the producer's orders and gets on a famous movie/TV roadster WAY harder than the script called for. A car freak in real life. I'm drawing a blank on the young man's name. Might remember in a few days. or not.

    Hello,

We finally finished the last season of the streaming series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” It is/was 5 seasons long and quite nice for those that lived through that time period. It was also a time capsule of old cars, hot rods, drag racing, a little history and family values, during this same story line.
    upload_2023-10-17_4-41-7.png
The show series follows the trials and tribulations of Mrs. Maisel. Up to this point, the cars were just outstanding. They certainly were part of the time period of the show. In one season, they wandered off the main topic of comedic action and stand up shows to portray a side adventure, which was totally unexpected.

A 1957 Chevy lines up against a 55 Chevy at a midnight drag race, supposedly outside of Las Vegas. The cars are definitely period correct and it takes place on a shortened dragstrip with the 50s-60s cars lined up to light up the race course.
    upload_2023-10-17_4-41-56.png
This part was a lot of fun to watch. The cars were the best part and they were realistic. Then the topper of the few minutes of the Las Vegas drag racing scenes showed two custom Mercury/Ford Sedans lowered, colorful and ready to race. One of the characters was coaxed into racing with the main character acting as the colorful starting line flag girl.

    upload_2023-10-17_4-42-24.png
The scene is exciting and fun. Just like in real life back in those late 50s and early 60s scenes in So Cal, as well as elsewhere drag racing took place. Cherry Avenue, Westminster Blvd. and the Terminal Island Freeway in the dark area of Long Beach was brought to mind... fun, fun, fun...

    Jnaki

It is/was my favorite TV streaming show, but my wife loves the old car sections and the clothes that people wore back then. This series portrays a good time era in those late 50s and early 60s. In those good old days, we were teenagers usually doing some silly stuff to get along in our simple life and world.
