I have a 47 flathead that i would like to sell Heads stamped 59ab "But" I would like to know how you as a buyer would feel if i removed heads to check for cracks ! Water was drained after the son had carb problems " it ran on propane (ranch truck) and he was sticking gas in tank " I wouldn't feel right selling it as is and take your luck and it be cracked! I would post pics before and after the removal Please give me some more opinions!! Thanks, Martin
Since it's a flatty, I'd go ahead and pull them if you don't wanna sell it "buyer beware". Maybe include a new set of gaskets. Just beware that you can't see everything that could be wrong with the block by just pulling the heads. It's a good start though.
thanks, didnt think about the gaskets since i work at a parts store that has a machine shop wanted to pull pan and heads but then i end up going farther in to it
I agree with hillbillyhell - I'd be more confortable being able to see what I'm getting. I don't like surprises when it comes time to rebuild a motor. Throwing in gaskets is a nice touch, especially if the engine has no cracks.
No one should buy even a flathead they've heard run without pulling the heads. Don't ask me how I know..... Anyone want a free flathead?
Ive bought and rebuilt a lot of Flatheads. I try to make a deal with the guy I buy it from, to take it home and tear it down and then get it hot tanked if I don't find any cracks at my shop. If the block is good I pay him for it. If it is not ok he can have it back. Had most of them cracked by a valve into the cylinder. Hope this helps.
